Where do you think the sweet spot is between active and idle gameplay in an Idle MMO ?

I really like the idea of games where going idle is useful, but actually sitting down and playing still feels meaningfully better.

I'm curious where everyone here draws the line.

Would you rather have a game where most progression can happen passively and active play mainly optimizes it, or something where idle systems handle the repetitive stuff while quests, combat, dungeons, progression decisions etc. still require you to actively play?

I feel like going too far in either direction can hurt the game. Too active and it stops fitting the reason a lot of people play browser games in the first place, but too idle and sometimes it feels like you're just checking a spreadsheet once a day.

What game do you think has handled this balance particularly well?

The Centralis is moving again!

The Centralis - Our Idle MMO Is Back in Development

Around seven months ago, we first revealed Centralis. Since then, we went quiet.

The project was never cancelled, but it needed more time, a clearer direction, and a much stronger foundation. We have now returned to active development, and we want to begin properly sharing the game again.

Centralis is an idle MMO set after the events of Beyond Solar.

Humanity has survived, but Earth has not recovered. The last major human city remains protected beneath a technological dome while the world beyond it is divided between hostile factions, abandoned infrastructure, mutated ecosystems, and machines left behind by the old world.

Players leave the safety of Centralis and progress through six major zones, beginning in the outskirts of Havenfall and eventually reaching the volcanic industrial ruins of Moltraxis.

The game is being designed around a mixture of active MMO progression and meaningful idle play.

Some of the main features include:

  • Multiple playable classes with distinct talent specializations and combat identities.
  • A full campaign that introduces the world, its characters, factions, professions, and major threats.
  • Six large progression zones, each with its own enemies, materials, world content, and dungeon.
  • Idle combat and resource gathering that continue while you are away.
  • Active combat preparation through builds, talents, equipment, consumables, companions, and encounter choices.
  • Gathering and crafting professions, including Mining, Harvesting, Salvaging, Fabrication, Engineering, Alchemy, Cooking, and Refining.
  • Deep equipment progression, stat combinations, upgrades, crafted gear, dungeon rewards, and Legendary items.
  • Multiplayer dungeons, world bosses, trading, guild systems, and long-term cooperative progression.
  • A level 100 endgame featuring harder dungeon difficulties, advanced crafting, rare materials, and continued character development.
  • Account-wide progression systems that reward long-term play without making active participation irrelevant.

Our goal is not to create a game that simply plays itself.

Centralis is intended to be an MMO that respects your time. You should always have something meaningful to work toward when actively playing, while still making progress during work, sleep, or time away from the game.

We will be sharing the redesigned world, classes, campaign, professions, itemization, enemies, and gameplay systems over the coming months.

There is still a great deal of work ahead, but Centralis is moving again.

This time, we plan to bring you along for the development process. If you want to be more involved in the development or have any questions please feel free to join our Discord.

*AI Disclosure: many of the current assets shown, including some icons and artwork, are placeholders or have not yet been implemented. These will be (No AI) created, improved, and replaced throughout development.
