A new contender has joined against AI hype, a hand puppet!

I was on my usual AI hate binge watch when I got recommended this. It’s a fucking Dino puppet show talking about the irrationality of AI hype, rationalists and the religious nature of pro-AI discourse. It definitely reminded me of the episode Ed did with Cal a couple of weeks back about the autonomous hacking.

Thought you guys would love this and the channel is like 3 days old!

Still baffles me that tech enthusiasts can criticize AI companies but still defend llms

I was watching the recent episode of tech report with Eli the computer guy where he made some claims that were honestly disappointing and concerning.

  1. When asked if we should stop making LLMs and AI due to safety reasons he basically in a very annoyed fashion said that we won’t have emails if that were the case. He even brought in a butterknife example saying that could also be dangerous if you decide to stab I guess? How does that even make sense? My butterknife doesn’t give me dubious medical advice or drives people to kill themselves because it can’t be full safeguarded.

  2. Another thing he said in defence of llms was that if you give a 3 year old a gun then the gun isn’t dangerous, it’s the 3 year old (basically speaking about the leadership). Again, the lack of awareness really shocks me here. My man, a gun is dangerous regardless of who holds it and that’s the same with an llm. You cannot fully control the output of an llm the same way you can’t make a gun shoot kisses at someone.

This is not to mention all the stolen data, resource use and impending doom that we’re are gonna be dealing with once this crashes.

There are many other things from this episode that grind my gears but I don’t think I wanna fuss over that.

Pebble Index 01 still not shipped?

I remember that all pre-order index 01s were gonna get shipped by end of June or July but I still haven’t heard any news.

Does anyone have an update on this?

Anyone remembers Porsche Unleashed? A VR mod for it would be so good 😭

It already had a full cockpit view and those early 2000s graphics would even run on standalone.

Here’s me manifesting some kind dev will make this a reality 🤞

I would love to take a crack at it myself too so if there are any resources some devs could point me to then that would be awesome! I have experience in C++, C#, some Java and python

I couldn’t finish part 3 of Navy Seals

Once they got to the Afghanistan bit about shooting on a family convoy and mutilating civilians I just couldn’t finish it. It was too depressing to hear that nothing happens to these bastards, no consequences for the harm they do to civilians. I know there were parts in the Vietnam conflict where they kill innocent civilians but the details of the brutality of the Afghanistan part broke me.

I really appreciate Robert speaking about it and bringing attention to it as I had no idea this was happening.

I need to take a break man 🥲

The episode with Cal about AI being treated as a religion hit me like a bible on the head!

I always had this feeling about AI but never put 2 and 2 together until this episode. Like of course a friend of mine who told me “AI is inevitable, you can’t avoid it” sounded like “Gaaaawd is coming you filthy heathen!!”

Also, how pride makes soldiers for the cause is something that I have experienced a lot in my job as a designer. When a pm or a dev comes along with their stupid ass generated design saying that they can do my work and then become defensive when I tell them that it’s not a good design. I often hear from them that it’s just gonna get better! That I should learn it too so I won’t get replaced, like a Jehovah’s Witness guy annoying me at my door.

I also liked seeing Ed learning to temper his anger about AI from a lens of what the technology can do (and is neat in some applications) vs. the evil of the hype machine, using Cal to bounce those thoughts off of. In turn, I have moments of introspection too about my hatred of AI and how important it is to separate it from the technology and how it has been marketed and scaled up (with a lot of stealing, fear mongering and environmental harm).

Overall, this episode is now one of my favs!
