Ozark Murder Ballads

I am digging into murder ballads (1) and want to join it with my love of the Ozark folklore. Can anyone point me to some murder ballads that originate or occur in the Ozark region? Both historical and contemporary songs and performers count.

  1. For my purpose I define a murder ballad a song that tells the story of a murder, true or fictional.

Mac OS Workflow?

MuseScore pissed me off for the last time and I’ve decided to throw my effort behind switching to Lilypond. I’m building a library of copyright free music and original compositions for a small music club.

I am a long time Emacs user so my plan is to use that to edit source files. Can anyone share their workflow or tips to help a new guy get started? Thanks!

Rainbow Cafe

I went there for lunch with a friend today and it is a very different place. The dining area is very sparse and bare. The menu is completely different.

I was told, not by staff, that the ownership has changed. Now I fear for my weekend breakfast options.

Lesser Known Media?

I was born in Kansas City (Missouri, thank you!) and spent most of my summers in southern Missouri and Arkansas with relatives. Life, and mostly work, ended up with me living in the Pacific Northwest. I have been feeling nostalgic for my time in the Ozarks lately.

I wanted to find movies, TV shows, and other media about the area and thought folks here would have some recommendations.

I know of True Detective S3 and the Netflix show Ozark. What else should I watch?

Manuscript of Songs Written During an Antarctic Expedition

The Library of Congress blog posted about them acquiring a manuscript of songs written during Charles Wilkes’ expedition exploring Antarctica and the Pacific. I thought this might be of interest to others here. I particularly like “Antarctic Mariner’s Song,” which has a contemporary recording included in the post.

Who will be the last man?

In the most recent episode of “Widow’s Bay,” a character sing a song while heading out to sea. At the end there is a better performance by what sounds like a group singing acapella. The chorus appears to be, “who will be the last man?” Does anyone recognize this song? Any ideas if it’s a historical maritime song or made up for the show?

Edit: It was written for the show. “Here, Richard sings a sea shanty called “Last Man,” written specifically for Widow’s Bay; writer and star Neil Casey (he plays Kurt) handled the lyrics, and the music was written by Richard Reed Parry of Arcade Fire.”

Haunted/Spooky Maritime Songs?

In the last episode of the show “Widow’s Bay” one of the characters sang a maritime song about the sea hag. I’m pretty sure the song was written for the show because the lyrics line up to the plot exactly. It did make me curious about other shanties and maritime songs that involve horror or spooky elements and I was hoping you wonderful folks could help a guy out with some suggestions.

If anyone is wondering here are the lyrics for the song from the show. Pardon any busted formatting as I’m posting this from my phone during my lunch break.

The Sea Hag

Lads say farewell to Ensign Trag
He went to shore and met the Hag
With just one gash betrothed they be
She followed bim on land and sea
For if you let her pierce your skin
Betwixt her thighs, your final sin
