Nikola Jokic on being named captain for Serbia's World Cup qualifying games in July: I don't know if I deserve it yet

https://basketnews.com/news-250366-nikola-jokic-named-new-serbias-captain.html

"I have been given the pleasure and privilege of being captain. Maybe I still have not deserved it, because many great names have worn the captain's armband, and there are guys who are older than me as well. The coach gave it to me, entrusted me with it, or however I should put it, but I will try to carry it and show everything on the court the way a captain should".

Jokic was named captain in absence of Serbia's regular captain Bogdan Bogdanovic, who will miss the upcoming qualifying games against Switzerland and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"I will see what it's like to be captain for the first time now. The emotions will surely be at a higher level. You represent these guys who work together with you, you represent your city, and your family. It is a privilege and a pleasure", said Jokic.

Jokic said that he decided to join the Serbian national team for the World Cup qualifying games this summer because he felt guilty about Serbia's bad performance at last year's EuroBasket.

"Maybe it is partly my own sense of guilt because of the failures we had at the last EuroBasket. I wouldn't say it's about avoiding shame, but there is definitely a sense of responsibility on my part. My goal is to help bring Serbia back to where it belongs in basketball".
