What to Wear? (22M Pre-Service Secondary Visual Arts)

Hey all,

Firstly, yes I am aware this is a somewhat frivolous question, however, it has been one of the things going through my mind heading into my first professional experience. I wanted to find out what kind of clothing is appropriate to wear as a secondary visual arts teacher? For context I am 22, male and genuinely don’t own any smart/formal clothing.

I want to put together a shopping list of solid clothing items and figured I’d ask the experts.

As well, if you even just have any general advice for a first prac, please let me know. I’m nervous but very excited!

Thank you.

TIFU - Ashamed of my Bad Temper

I (22M) am writing this to get some advice on how to handle being completely in the wrong. I was driving to work and decided to stop by a cafe to get a coffee on the way. I was on a residential street when a guy driving a longer vehicle was doing a 3 point turn by reversing into a driveway.

I was totally impatient and drove through when the gap was just big enough as he reversed. The guy then honked at me and drove behind me flashing his high beams a few times. In response, I flipped him off out the window. Immature, I know.

The cafe was at the end of this residential street, so when I pulled into the carpark, he drove past, what I didn’t realise was that he had decided to park on the street. So then, I’m inside and just finished ordering my coffee when he comes in. He’s a middle aged guy, and I don’t immediately recognise him as the same dude until he says “mate, was it worth the one second you saved by getting through that gap?”. It immediately irked me. I puffed out my chest and starting going on about him needing to “resit (his) test if (he) can’t pull off a three point turn” and “if (he) wants a problem (he) can have one” etc…

As soon as I got confrontational he disengaged with the conversation and went silent, waiting for me to walk away before approaching the counter to order his coffee. While I was waiting I felt terrible about how I acted, I sat with it until I got my coffee. I approached him and said “that was impatient and rude of me, I apologise” and offered to shake his hand, which he didn’t reciprocate but did kind of give me a nod.

Since then I’ve just felt really guilty all day, I want to be better than that. I don’t want to intimidate people and I feel like a wannabe macho, brutish idiot. It’s not the first time I’ve been too quick to anger either. I’m just wondering if anyone has any advice for how to handle situations like this without letting pride get in the way in the moment. I always seem to think I’m in the right when it’s happening, but then feel terrible after, I hate thinking that my ignorance has ruined someone’s day.

TL;DR Squared up to a guy at the cafe after road rage, I’m in the wrong.

I want my dad back.

Hey guys, I don’t know anyone else dealing with this in my personal life so I thought I’d rant here. It’s comforting knowing there’s people out there who understand how frustrating this is.

My (M22) dad (M55) has gone completely down the rabbit hole and I’m worried that I’ll never get through to him. When I was a kid, I always remember him being grounded, emotionally intelligent and an advocate for accepting others. About 5 years ago however, after a bout of depression following his sister (and my aunt’s) passing, he started heavily consuming and becoming obsessed with conspiracy theories.

It began with surface level stuff like 9/11 and the moon landing, eventually developing into other territory - everything from lies about the shape of the earth, the size and proximity of the sun and moon, a complete distrust in allopathic medicine to underground networks of satan-worshiping elites who control the world. Despite never practicing Christianity, he has also become convinced that we are in the middle of a spiritual warfare.

Pretty much every conversation I have with him, regardless of how far away it is in relevance to any conspiracy devolves into him parroting talking points from David Icke and the rhetoric of Rumble accounts he follows. Once a progressive, he has also begun adopting a homophobic and transphobic perspective, believing that the LGBTQIA+ community is somehow a movement to begin normalising child sexual abuse via “MAPs”.

He is also a “sovereign citizen”, he refuses to pay speeding/parking fines, believing that documents that capitalise his name aren’t applicable to his “true self” and that they refer to a corporate entity or a “strawman”. This thinking has also led to him refusing to pay tax, proclaiming that he is not “in contract” with the tax office, pointing to various sections of the AMERICAN constitution to back up his argument (hilariously we live in Australia, yet he does not see the problem with this argument). The implications of his beliefs have begun leading to more serious outcomes as well, as he is searching for a rental but cannot produce tax records as proof of income. I worry that his luck will run out soon and he will be audited. He doesn’t keep money in the bank either, believing that “fiscal” currency has no worth and instead purchases large quantities of gold and silver.

It seems impossible but I was curious to hear if anyone has succeeded in bringing someone like this back to reality. My dad and I have been very close and I care about him a lot. Anyway, end of rant!

Best Platform for Finding a Room / Share-House in Perth?

Hey guys, I’m a 21-year-old student looking for a room. Single dad is downsizing due to cost of living so understandably won’t have room for me in a one bedroom unit. My question is what platform is currently the best for finding a room/sublet? I’ve tried using Flatmates, but the rooms get snapped up quickly and messages are delayed unless you pay a monthly fee.

Is Gumtree still a viable option? Or FaceBook? Let me know!
