My thoughts on the currently running m2 pro shorts

I really don’t understand the love for the M2 Pro. The Currently Running half tights are significantly better. I think the M2 Pro got a lot of attention because it was essentially their take on Satisfy, and while people point to the five pockets as an improvement, I think they took an incredible shell fabric and made it worse with the liner.

The biggest issue is the liner . First off it’s way too thick. If you live somewhere hot and humid and/or sweat a lot, it retains moisture and basically gives you constant swamp ass, completely negating how light and airy the shell is. Say what you will about Satisfy, but their Justice liner is significantly thinner and works much better under a shell. They also uses a brief liner with this type of fabric, which really lets the shell excel.

What’s frustrating is that Currently Running already knows how to make a great liner. Their half tights have better seam placement and a better fitting waist. The M2 Pro has a center seam through the crotch that gets annoying while running, and the waist is huge despite the compression through the thighs feeling right.

The pockets also sound better on paper than they work in practice. The shell is too long relative to the liner. Most shorts that use liner pockets have a much bigger difference in length between the liner and shell, making the pockets easy to access. With the M2 Pro, you end up fighting with all that extra shell fabric just to get to the side pockets. It bunches and gets stuck going up or gets caught when you pull it back down. The rear zip pocket also sits too low, so I end up sitting on whatever is in it. The position of the rear zip is never an issue with their half tights btw.

I’m sure the thicker liner will be better once it gets colder, but at that point I’d probably just run in tights. I know the M2 Pro has already been updated, but it still feels like it needs another revision. A thinner liner, better seam placement, a smaller waist, and a shorter shell would make these significantly better.

Men’s Vernon scrub pants

I bought the Vernon Relaxed Straight Pants and was genuinely excited to see Figs finally release a true straight leg option for men instead of yet another slim fit or jogger style.

More broadly, I wish Figs would offer greater variety in men’s pant fits. I started my career wearing standard hospital scrubs that were baggy and often ill-fitting, but there was something honest and functional about them. About ten years ago, I switched to Figs because they offered a more modern, tailored look that felt current. The problem is that a decade later, the men’s line still seems largely focused on slim and skinny silhouettes, even though fashion trends have moved toward more relaxed fits.

Not every male healthcare worker wants a fitted look. As a physician in my 40s with a lean runner’s build, I have no interest in wearing pants that cling to my legs or look like I’m trying to dress twenty years younger. There is plenty of room in the lineup for relaxed straight, wider straight, and other contemporary fits that balance comfort with a professional appearance.

Unfortunately, the Vernon pants miss the mark in a few areas.

The biggest issue is the pocket design. The product page advertises four pockets: two front pockets and two “pass-through” pockets. In reality, the pants effectively have only two large drop pockets. Rather than a traditional side seam, each leg uses a three-panel construction with seams running down both the front and back of the leg, giving the appearance of a pintuck pant. This shifts the pocket opening rearward and causes each pocket to wrap far around the side of the leg. The left pocket contains a small internal mesh sleeve that can hold something like AirPods, but there are no obvious pass-through pockets anywhere. Even if you count the mesh sleeve, that still only brings the total to three storage areas, not four.

The design itself feels unusual for men’s scrub pants, particularly because there are no rear pockets at all. I’m firmly in the “less is more” camp when it comes to pockets, but a basic setup of two front pockets and one rear pocket for a wallet seems like the minimum expectation. I’m not sure whether this is a website error or a design oversight, but either way it is disappointing.

I also noticed what appears to be early wear after a single wash. It’s too soon to know for certain, but the fabric already looks like it may be prone to pilling.

Sizing is another issue. I’m 5’10”, 150 pounds, and normally wear a 32-inch inseam. These were surprisingly short and looked like high-waters on me. I had to exchange them for the tall version.

Finally, the fabric feels noticeably thinner than I expected.

Overall, these pants feel like a missed opportunity. It’s hard not to wonder whether they began as a women’s design and were adapted for the men’s line with minimal changes. That’s unfortunate because a well-executed relaxed straight-leg scrub pant is exactly what many men have been asking Figs to make.

I posted a review on their site, it never updated, so I’m posting one here.

Five

I picked up a Five recently after contemplating one for years. I have Sonos speakers all over the house, Arc Ultra, two Era 300s, four Era 100s, two Subs, two Roams, and two Move 2s and a play.

The Five is in my dining room, where I also have a Move 2. On its own, the Five sounds surprisingly flat in that room. I ran Trueplay and it helped a little, but not much. The interesting part is that when I group the Move 2 with it, the overall sound becomes significantly better. It’s almost as if the Move 2 adds some warmth and low-end presence.

It’s not that the Five lacks bass. At higher volumes it has plenty of bass, and even at lower volumes it’s very clear and detailed. It just feels a bit one-dimensional. When I listen to my Era 100s or Era 300s as stereo pairs, the presentation feels much fuller and more immersive.

Am I just accustomed to stereo pairs throughout the house, making a single Five sound flat by comparison? Or am I missing something with the setup?
