ESP32 Sonos controller update: full library browsing, favourites now playable

Touchscreen Sonos remote running on an ESP32-P4 board.

The Sources screen used to show one entry, "Sonos Playlists". Now it lists what your system actually has:

  • Music Library (artists, albums, genres, composers, tracks)
  • Sonos Favourites
  • Internet Radio
  • NAS shares
  • Current queue
  • Line-in, if the speaker has one

Favourites is the useful one. Anything in your Sonos favourites now plays from the panel, whatever service it came from. Spotify, YouTube Music, radio stations, all of it.

Also recently:

  • 3 player themes, 4 clock faces
  • 7" screen support
  • Accented characters render properly now
  • Lots of stability fixes

August Office Hours - Old Fashioned AMA

Hey all! It's been a few weeks since we all chatted and went through Tabs and more with some of the team who worked them. This time we're going old school with an old fashioned AMA with just the team of myself(Liz), Andrew, Tim, Keith, Atom, and Andrew. This time we are all in the office together where we will be in the same room (and not virtually)!

https://preview.redd.it/dodynyf3ldkh1.jpg?width=8064&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5dfec98408241d7009c43a22440e8cc42f8faa81

We have released a new feature recently, iOS Live Activities, which we know you have all been waiting on so feel free to ask questions about that or anything else you've got.

🗓️ Office Hours Details

📅 Date: Thursday, August 20th
⏰ Time: 1p Eastern until 4p Eastern

How This Works

  1. Post your questions in this thread ahead of time
  2. Tune in on the scheduled date/time
  3. The Sonos team will reply directly in-thread

A few quick housekeeping notes to help things go smoothly:

  • We’re not Sonos Support, but we may be able to offer some troubleshooting context or point you in the right direction.
  • We can’t dive into product roadmaps or anything that hasn’t already been publicly shared.
  • We’re also not PR, Legal, or Finance, so there are some topics we simply won’t have visibility into or be able to comment on.

Our goal is to respond to as many of you as possible, so please try to keep each comment focused to one question. For folks who stack a whole bunch of questions, we will pick one of the questions that hasn’t been previously answered.

The team can’t wait to hear from you at 1PM on Thursday, August 20th!

Front Left/Right. Worth it?

My current setup is:
- Arc
- 2x One SL
- SUB gen 4
It’s a big room with an 85 inch TV and I love the sound.

I mostly use it for Dolby Atmos movies and would like to get the best quality I can.

Should I invest in adding 2 more speakers? Is the difference noticeable? What speaker do you recommend?

If i add more, should I use Sonosequencr?

Thanks!!

Lock Screen Control

The newest update allowed lock screen control. It had been gone for a long time but came back. It only brings the last speaker controlled but hey, it’s better than nothing. After updating app go to app preferences and turn on. It’s not a volume bar but a button for - and +

Apartment. Thoughts/experience upgrading beam gen 1 to Arc Ultra?

To give all the details, I use an LG OLED TV with apple tv 4k and ps5 pro. I have the beam gen 1 + 2 SL 100 surround speakers. I was debating on upgrading to the Arc Ultra right now or getting the sub mini and getting the arc ultra later this year. Any thoughts on this scenario? I thought the ultra would be the biggest hitter immediately, but I read a number of people complaining about it before adding a dedicated sub.

Using moca and Access point or mesh for whole home wifi

Hey everyone! Just bought a house and am looking to improve the wifi situation. I've been using AI for guidance, but want to make sure it's not telling me nonsense... Would really appreciate some feedback if possible!

Thanks in advance for the help, I really appreciate the supportiveness of Reddit communities!

My setup:

House is roughly 1,900 sq ft across two levels (main floor + basement). Older construction with thick walls/brick, so Wi-Fi drops off quite a bit on the far side of the main floor (kitchen and front entrance).

I have a Bell Fibe Gigabit with the Giga Hub stuck in the basement utility area. Can’t really move it.

Current devices: a bunch of Google nest hubs/cameras, some Philips hue lights, and sonos speakers/Soundbars

My original plan after using AI and reading online was to get a mesh system. But then I found an old, disconnected coax line running straight from the basement utility wall up into our living room and Gemini recommended relying on that. Specifically, Gemini suggested I buy a MoCA 2.5 adapter kit to turn the coax into an Ethernet link upstairs and buy a wifi router that I turn into an access point, which should take care of everything , by using the same wifi name and password

Since it’s wired backhaul and just in AP mode, my thinking is that everything stays on the exact same subnet, Sonos won't drop out between rooms, and I don't have to mess with Bell bridge mode / PPPoE.

Does this sound reasonable or ais Gemini giving me some false hope around implementation and ease of this solution? ? Would really appreciate some guidance, thanks!!

How do I change sub mini bass level

I could change it in a previous version of the app the sub woofer level. But maybe I’m stupid but I cannot find it at all. The sub mini is joined as a group together with my sonos arc

Live Activity on macOS

Hadn't seen this posted before, nor was I aware that the two OS' did this! Just logged into my Mac after a few days and look what popped up in the menu bar...

This is coming straight from my iPhone, nothing installed on my mac, just both on the same Apple account.

Nice!

Beam 1 + Sub Mini bundle vs waiting for Beam 2?

Hello,

I've been lurking this sub for a couple months while planning my surround setup. So far I've picked up 2x Sonos One gen 2 for the rears, which I paid $200 for. My total budget is around 700-750usd

Now hunting for a Beam and maybe a sub/sub mini. Found someone local selling both. Beam gen 1 for $170 and a Sub Mini for $370.

Trying to decide if I just pull the trigger on this or hold out for a Gen 2 Beam instead. I know the Gen 2 adds Atmos virtualization and eARC, but not sure how much that actually matters. At the moment my tv doesn't have eARC but I do plan on upgrading before the end of the year.

Is the beam gen 1 to beam gen 2 a noticeable upgrade. Should I go for the beam 1 + sub mini or look for a beam 2 then get a sub later one?

*Edit: the person selling the sub mini and beam one gave me a price 543 for both.

Who is the winner: Move 1 for $150 or Move 2 for $350?

Hi everyone!

So I’m thinking of getting a Sonos move speaker. I initially purchased a Sonos move 2 from Best Buy open box excellent for $300 + tax = $340.

However, a friend offered me their Sonos move gen 1 for $150 if I wanted it instead.

Not sure on the history of the speaker since he got it used but I trust him and he says they work great without any issues!

I currently have an arc in the family room and will likely place this in the living room to have continuous sound for parties we host. But like the ability to move it outside in the yard as needed.

Wondering what the better choice is?

Finally feel brave enough to try updating.

Im a long time Sonos user that has been holding off on updating for a couple of years due to the whole app update fiasco.

Reading through recent posts and specially with the ios live activity addition it seems like it might be the right time to do it.

Before i do though i wanted to ask if anyone had any suggestions on the proper way to go about it.

Assuming update the app first and from there update the rest of the system?

Im currently on app 16.1. Build number is 78151030.
System is on version 16.2. Build 79154060.

System is on a wired connection.

Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks.

Play 5 drops out when using Line In.

Any suggestions are appreciated. This has been going on for over a year and I’m ready to give up on Sonos. I’ve spent way too many hours with their support and it’s the same script over and over. They have no clue.
I have two play 5s paired as a stereo. The turntable is wired to a Pyle pre amp and then into the headphone jack of one of the play 5.
Often one of the speakers will drop out randomly. It will often be the speaker that is wired to the turntable.
I had this same set up minus the pre amp at my other house and never had a problem.
I’ve added the pre amp to lower the source power in the Sonos app, isolated the turntable with a foam stand, upgraded all wires, I’ve added a third play5. It’s not stereo paired obviously. It doesn’t matter which combination of two speakers I pair, I experience the same drop.
I used to think it would only happen when volume was turned up. That’s no longer the case. I’ve hard reset them. Updated software. It’s on auto update. I can unplug and re plug in devices. Reset the Sonos router piece.
Anybody got any solutions?

USB-C to Line-In adapter out of stock until October?! (France) Is this happening everywhere?

Hey everyone,
I recently bit the bullet and bought two Sonos Era 100s to set up as a stereo pair. I was super excited to connect my turntable and my CD player to the new setup, but I've hit a major roadblock.
The official Sonos USB-C to 3.5mm jack line-in adapter is completely out of stock on the Sonos France website. The most frustrating part? The estimated delivery date is October 16th. That’s two whole months from now!
It’s pretty annoying to invest in a new setup and not be able to actually test if I can properly connect my physical media right out of the box because a simple cable is missing.
I wanted to ask the community:

  • Is this cable out of stock in other countries too, or is it just a regional issue in France?
  • Does anyone know what is actually going on with their inventory?

Any insights (or tested third-party alternatives that actually work) would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Help please

Hello, I have the following problem.
My tv is connected home system configuration (Sonos beam + 2 Sonos five)

When I add another Sonos speakers to this one (for example, to put music in the bedrooms), the other Sonos speakers starts to fade in and fade out, sometimes for microseconds sometimes longer.

What did you do to resolve this problem ?

I’m wondering also if my TP link deco not in bridge mode could be the problem

Thank you

Seeing different settings for same user on different phone

My wife and I are both iPhone users. We’re both on the latest version of the app and the latest iOS update. On my phone I’m able to set up the live tile and also I have disabled Sonos net and it shows that on my phone. On her phone connected the same Wi-Fi network I’m logged in as the same user. She doesn’t see the option for a live tile and it even offers her a selection of what channel for Sonos net even though I have it disabled. What’s going on?

Might Return Sonos Beam Advice Please

Picked up a nice 55' LG OLED C5 and love it. Paired it with the Sonos Beam Gen 2 which is pretty awesome. The problem is trying to connect to a wired speaker (my bluetooth AirPods Max.)

When I put a disc into my Blu Ray player and try to switch to Wired Speaker, it connects for two seconds and then defaults back to HDMI E-arc. I finally found some threads and articles from three to five years ago that have the same problem. The advice was to turn off SIMPLINK HDMI CEC and disable E-arc. That works but it's a pain to go through all that. The other option was to just pull out the HDMI cable from the soundbar every time I want to play a movie. That works but its also a pain.

Even though the sound on the Beam is fantastic, I will mostly have to listen through headphones because I like my movies LOUD. My condo neighbors, not so much.

Someone also suggested a CEC blocker, but I heard that it cuts out Atmos. Anyone have any other suggestions? I really like the Beam, but this sound issue is a real Debbie Downer.

Cheers.
