Starting my Business on a Budget.... NOT AN AD, JUST NERDING OUT

So Self-Hosting my business on a majorly low budget... like painful low budget, altought it has driven me to learn efficent python, to the point what was running on a full rack server has been made so fast and efficent that it runs on a 8gb 10 year old optiplex with very little speed lose, and this is not vibe-coded business project, 5 years of hard work, 10 years of thought experiments and self convincing I could do. Years of building training sets, training my own ML models, scripts, coding obscure functinationlity, and Now im in the home stretch getting ready to go live.

This is not a promotion for my business idea, and I wont answer questions about the business as again not an Ad not even going to say name or what I do, but I just wanted to share my Self Hosted Datacenter, because it feels sexy to do something like this on such a small budget.

Yes its a fully 3D printed, rack, all my budget of $200 went into picking up a collection of optiplex's from an ex home laber (i dont get why they would be an ex either). We have Security, Hosting, Automation, and even redendency failover. Already had a UPS and a 5G router with tons of credit on it as a backup (won the 5gb router and credit at a CTF event) ... big box on the right is my home AI server ... which ate up the original budget for the proof of concept that became the MVP hardware.

On the shelf still to be installed is 8 x 2.5" SATA JBOD units, when I pick up more drives (if price ever comes down) that I can raid into a hot and cold backup for the main systems. Full rack including AI server is around 9 Kwh per day, which is the biggest killer in terms of cost right now.

But yea, pretty excited, nearly at the finish line of 10 years of ideas, and 5 years of building, months of 3-4am bug fix's to wake up for my day job at 9am. But im also crazy proud of my designs and system, that on such a budget the full MVP runs on minimal hardware why its currently getting stress tested by my testers, also thankfully its not a big volume business, not going to have a few k people at the same time, would be lucky if it was maybe 50 max at a day or time, and at that point if im hitting that, i'll be able to get new hardware and upload a new photo of a new full size rack that kills my power bills even more.

29 minutes, to write a Markdown doc and Push to Git ???

Over the last week I have noticed cursor has got crazy slow, like as the title said tonight I ran a command asking it to write a MD file with the current build updates and then do a push to git for the code and the document so I can run a test on the test server. 29 minutes... it took 29 minutes for a normally 1-3 minute task, and to top it off, the output was wrong, it created a markdown and started talking in the markdown about a random feature not implemented and making up commands for that feature to be called.

What is going on??? Am i rate limited or is there a bug, im so confused why im having this issue. and this isnt just on one project it seems to be across all projects.

Running on Windows 11, latest build of cursor as of 13/08/2026, also using Auto for model choice

anyone have any ideas or suggestions??

Text To Speech On Response

It would be really awesome if we could do text to speech on the returned data, even if it was a basic windows text to speech just to be able to listen to the response while doing other tasks for people who struggling reading i.e. Dyslexics like myself that struggle reading words but understand them once they are heard.

Any Update on The Updater Uninstall On Close Bug??

So over a month ago I posted about the bug I was having, still no updates, and it's a very annoying bug, even the latst download today still happening on that one. Like if i close the app, literally the second I close it, I go to click on the app icon again and its gone, it has uninstalled itself. This is over 2 months of happening now, daily on closing the app, on multiple different builds.

Quick context:
On Windows 11 - Latest Build and Patches
Hardware - not even going to list its not hardware
network - full network connection no drops or issues there
Cursor version - X64 3.13.25 (downloaded fresh today and still having bug)

https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1us881p/uninstall_crash_while_shutting_down/

https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1u7sdqa/bug_crashing_on_shutdown/

When i close it i get the following errors in order:

https://preview.redd.it/du95cycyadgh1.png?width=412&format=png&auto=webp&s=544769a6cfb138bfcb696728526c20f00703d524

Then as soon as I retry or click cancel I get the following:

https://preview.redd.it/nkp4xdl1bdgh1.png?width=405&format=png&auto=webp&s=d959d2c31b668ddb9ebcb024c8a34ecc08f08e94

I have checked the log files that are made for the updater, it is empty, every single time there are no logs for the program created. When i try reinstalling this is what is maintained running, the app can kill it but incase its needed for debugging I added it. And I have confirmed using Process Hacker, they are in fact still running two node.js instances every time on close.

Uninstall Crash While Shutting Down

So I posted before about the issue and got no real responses other than other people having the issue:

Original Post TDLR: "BUG - Crashing on Shutdown"

Weird issue for the 3 weeks, every night when shutting down cursor I got an error, basically saying cursor has crashed, followed by another error instantly saying, "failed to install cursor update". This results in cursor crash uninstalling from my system. Needing me to install again every day. The error log thats meant to be in local/temp/cursor-inno-updater, gets removed by the uninstall crash.

Its been a nearly a month since then, and I download the latest patch about 4 days ago, and seemd to fix it, was working well, until tonight. same thing again. Crashed on close force removing itself from Windows 11. The original errors appear to be javascript realted not shuttind down correctly while trying to update.

I tried reinstalling now as I forgot to add something to my code, and noticed that two node.js instances are running, which are the same that cause the issue on shutting down.

I decided to write an udpate post as I took the change to take a picture of the reinstall screen on boot.

of note I have reinstalled, and closed the app, and it imedially crashed again during the update process. No servers or anything was run from the app, in fact didnt even modify the code I just wanted to see. This just happend on version 3.10.20, exact same issue, closes, then 2 minutes later popup saying error failed to find curosr, followed by updater crash for curosr.

Large Scale Multilingual Transaltions on a Budget

Hey all,

Have a question, I'm getting alot of data daily, maybe around 300-500k entries of around 25–50 characters each. They are multilingual, and I need to convert them to english, and it has to be in near real time before 10pm each night, for the project im working on.

Now the budget part, im working with what I have which is basically a couple of i5 Dell optiplex's, so what ever solution we have needs to be lower compute power.

So far I tired the following:

- LibTranslate - local to the optiplex with multiple concurrent killed the system, on remote systems batched over 3 system still wasnt able to keep up.

- Argos - tried running argos locally with multiple concurrent, that killed hte machine

- Keyword multilingual datasets - only worked a little but missed so much when it came to keyword translations

- Time based translation - content gets queued and then translated (was looking at 83hrs to catch up current run), translating at the time of reciving the content, huge delay with submission and loss of data.

- Api based translation - googletrans rate limited me after a few minutes, so that killed that pretty quick

Im out of Ideas, I am open to suggestions from others who deal with large amounts of content like this and do real time translations or high speed translations of up to 120 langauges to English.

Thanks for any input and help

#FeltNerdyMightDeleteLater

So this is my second budget bult, my first I have posted before the first contains a NAS with alot of storage, so this new 10-inch build is purely app focused.

I know mismtch of systems and unmanged switch, but what you see is a $300 drive around multiple marketplaces on a Saturday and some mental deals. Also yes I did censor the screws becase when i was about to post I just noticed they are extremly reflective.

https://preview.redd.it/7fe2d4gvue9h1.png?width=575&format=png&auto=webp&s=c6c3b5fcabb8e34afa67fcf57a143e79884b7b7e

Top to bottom:

  1. Dell Optiplex 9020
  2. Dell Optiplex 3040
  3. Dell Optiplex 7050
  4. Netgear Gigabit Switch GS308 (unmanged on a budget got it for $5, they are like 15 new on amazon)
  5. Dell Optiplex 3050
  6. Dell Optiplex 3050

What's Not Show (Prime Day orders delayed for over a week...):

  1. UPS (8 gang socket will run full rack and router)
  2. 5G Router
  3. Expansion 1gb network card

Most of the machines are between 8-16gb, i3 and i5.

So the build:

All the systems will be using Ubuntu, each for a different purpose. For Context, I run my own business and on the side of that I also host a bunch of propritery API's. Now my buisness needs for web related content is EXTREMLY low, and instead of paying the stupid fees I was on the VPS I did some math and realised I could just self-host the system myself without much impact on service. Unless I hit a maybe 250k users at a time, and my services are way too niche for that.

So each box will have different tasks such as:

  1. Will be dedicated WebServer for services with tunneling for user access
  2. Will be a dedicated Firewall, IPS, IDS, (haven't decided yet), but router will go straight into this and then the out will be into the switch (yes I did just explain how a firewall worked lol)
  3. Will be Internal API server, they are low power API's (but I am considering doing a machine learning API and just getting one of those SATA GPU adapters to try out, if anyone has ideas on that let me know im intrested)
  4. Clone of Internal API server but for external usage
  5. Database Service will be hooking up with solid storage (eventually ... i seen costs and cried)
  6. AI Agent System + N8N (I know... eww ai... but im running a set of agents that monitor emails and stuff for my business and simple tasks using my local AI Server which isnt in this rack, its a full tower I posted about before. Also N8N because Automation is king when your a business owner)

But yet this is the build pretty simple and straight forward, im a nerdy tech guy so running my own infrastrcuture for my business was always like "Woooo" fun, so yea I decided to take a leap last pay day and do a Marketplace road trip lol

What's a good replacement for Bookio, since they are gone now?

Hey All,

I was on bookio for the last few years, and I hoenstly loved it, but recently they decided to shutup shop in the UK, meaning no more book keeping services here. They have a deal going with TIDE and tide have been spamming me with messages saying "9 months free" ...etc if you move from Bookio over. But im not sure if tide is for me, as I already have a bank and such.

The question I have is what is everyone else using and what can people recommend as bookkeeping software going forward. Bookio was awesome because it was free and then the anual plan wasn't to expensive, and it literally covered everything to the point I didn't even need an accountant (but still got one to go over everything at the end of the year).

Just looking for the next step going foward.

Thanks for any input everyone, intrested in either hosted, or even self-hosted or anything else specifically for the UK

BUG - Crashing on Shutdown

Having a weird issue for the last 3 weeks, every night when shutting down cursor I got an error, basically saying cursor has crashed, followed by another error instantly saying, "failed to install cursor update". This results in cursor crash uninstalling from my system. needing me to install again everyday.

I am

- Windows 11 - Latest build as of June 2026

- Specs arent even a concern with this system, other then its an AMD 64bit system

- The version that crashed on me today was the newest download from the cursor site 3.7.42, but this has been happening on older version for the last 3 weeks.

Its not causing a loss of data, when I reinstall, it just kicks off where it was when I shutdown, just really annoying constantly having to reinstall it everymoring. Anyone have any ideas?

Built a local Reddit archiver + viewer

I finally got tired of losing good Reddit threads to deletions, locked posts, mod nukes, and random unlisting, so I built a small local workflow for archiving posts I care about, and had a feeling yall Data Hoarders like me would appricate it.

https://preview.redd.it/fot5nl98ln7h1.png?width=1649&format=png&auto=webp&s=6c3203dfe067ff76eeb267252a60c0001565b326

It’s two parts:

  1. Chrome extension that captures a Reddit post into Markdown
    • title / subreddit / author / score
    • full post text
    • images, gifs, videos, links
    • nested comments (kept in thread structure)
  2. Local viewer app that reads the saved Markdown folder
    • browse/search/filter archived posts
    • render media inline (including common video hosts)
    • keeps the comment tree readable

Main goal was “save it once, keep it forever” in a format that isn’t locked into some cloud tool.

I also added folder-based export so it writes straight into my archive directory instead of dumping everything into Downloads.

Still improving edge cases (Reddit UI changes, odd embed formats, etc.), but it’s already solid for normal post pages.

If people want, I can keep iterating it with feedback from this sub. here is the link, I hope its useful to some of you: https://github.com/WhiskeyCoder/Reddit-Archived it is to me
