What makes wildlife want to live in a certain area?

Sometimes I think about the birds, mostly magpies and jackdaws strolling about on the grass, why it is they live in this particular town. Is it because they were born here and become homesick if they leave or did they choose it for some other reason? Not that far from here is a much bigger city with better opportunities, I suppose they're just unaware of it. Some might not like the city life perhaps.

I don't know why you'd live here if you had a choice, I wouldn't if I didn't happen to work here... But humans I've spoken with here seem to prefer it here so I guess it's not out of the realm of possibilities that the birds might too.

How does SUZUKI get so little power out of their engines?

I stumbled onto the specs of the APRILIA RS660, a parallel twin with very similar physical specs as the 650 I have, or the SV650 to make the comparison more fair. 645 vs 659 cc, both 81 mm bore. Not much difference there. Still, the RS puts out about 100 hp (as much as a FIAT 100HP!) and the SV puts out a mere 70-something. That's like a 25% increase. Obviously there's more to engines than just volume and that but I think it's quite remarkable. I wonder what decisions they made to make all that difference possible.

How do you change battery on the Suzukey?

There seems to be a compartment there but I don't see any obvious way to open it. Is it passively powered by the immobilizer system somehow? Bike is a 2025 DL650XT.

Rangemaxxing on the 650

If you ride very conservatively you can get some impressive range out of the 20 l tank and smooth v-twin. Of course, that only lasts as long as your patience.. The V-Strom is very fun to throw around some logging roads.

12V cigarette plug use case

For those of us stuck with the ancient 12 V plug, is there something useful we can do with it? I've been wanting to find a usb-c charger with USB-PD that supports a power level close to the 36W maximum rating for the socket but I'm not sure it exists and I'm not competent enough to make one myself at this point although I've been considering it. I don't even want to bother getting a 5V, 1A regular USB plug or whatever they are.

I was looking at the MotoArt Motoflator which seems like a really nice product just by the looks of if but unfortunately it has a 4.2 amp current draw compared to the 650's 3A maximum.

What can I do with it!?

Mypy not catching my drift

Hi, I have an annoyance and thought perhaps you could help. I've generified the code a bit, my problem is Mypy or whatever doesn't understand that lower-case v in this example will be of type V, since dict.get returns V | None and I've already handled the None case. I've written pass where other code would be but that's beside the point.

dicty: dict[K, V] = dict()
setty: set[K] = set()
match (k in setty, dicty.get(k)):
  case (False, None):
    pass
  case (False, v):
    v.fn()
  case _:
    pass

The error in this case would be something like "None type doesn't have function fn" but as I said it's never gonna be None here. Can I clarify this somehow? I can cast v to V but that's dumb and I shouldn't have to. Are there better extensions that do type checking perhaps?

Windfarms are fun to explore

I do prefer a more natural road surface rather than this crushed rock though.

Expand the garage with DR-Z4S..?

Would I be crazy to want to get a SUZUKI DR-Z4S in addition to my V-Strom 650XT? I've found out I really like riding on the vast amounts of gravel roads we have here in north Scandinavia and I can't shake the thought of how fun it would be on a less porky bike compared to my 650XT.

However it's illegal to ride offroad here and I can't think of any trails that exist like they do in the US and Australia and wherever else Youtube videos with the DR-Z are shot. So I'm thinking it might be a stupid idea. And it's really expensive, $11670 base price, more than my XT was.

What do you think, would these bikes be too similar? I've never ridden a dirtbike or dual sport before.

Windfarm!

I love these places, so fun to explore. First outing with my new flaunty accessories (smokescreen and chrome oil filler cap).

Dry rotted tyre after only two years?

I was planning on switching out my tyres next year but I was inspecting the front tyre tonight and discovered what seems to be some cracks in between the.. Cracks. Bike is garage kept so not sun beaten. It is the OEM tyres that came with the bike. Second picture to show date code.

Smokescreen and crome oil filler cap. Haven't tried the oil cap yet, need to get a gasket for it and I feel like the threads are narrower than the OG plastic plug, wonder if it'll fit.. It'll stick out like a sore thumb, chrome on matte gray x) Don't know what SUZUKI were thinking.

*edit, forgot about the valve stem caps! Big pimpin'
