A recipe for the Space Marine 2 Leviathan look

A recipe for the Space Marine 2 Leviathan look

So the Leviathan scheme the SM2 developers went with is a bit of a variation on the conventional look, which I think is a bit too purple for the nids to feel menacing. In SM2, the skin is less pink and the carapace segments have a teal underhue that shines through depending on the angle of the lighting. I wanted to replicate some of that.

I'm particularly happy with this scheme because it's the first time I haven't followed a tutorial but just messed around a bit to see where I'd land. It's pretty easy, and fast to do as well.

The method:

Primer: Wraithbone

Skin/Gun: Drybrush with Pallid Wych Flesh, then give it a thin coat of Agrax Earthshade. Done.

Carapace: Two thin coats of Incubi Darkness for proper coverage. Then a thin coat of Magos Purple contrast to darken it. Then cover the rear half of each segment in a Phoenician Purple glaze. Then cover the rear half of the Phoenician Purple in a Screamer Pink glaze. Then draw some quick lines with Dawnstone.

Fleshy parts: A thin layer of Bugman's Glow with a shading of Carroburg Crimson.

Hooves/claws: Abaddon Black with some Khorne Red.

I struggle a little bit with how to get my IF minis to the next level. I feel like I have significant freedom when painting the red/silver of my Word Bearers or even the Zandri Dust/Thunderhawk Blue coats of my recently acquired IG. But I don't really know how to evolve my Imperial Fists.

tldr I cover them in a 50/50 averland/yriel coat and then do a recess shade with a really small brush with Reikland Fleshshade, after which I trace the edges with my highlights. It's... alright. My minis look like they're responsibly painted but they're not exciting, because it leaves the base coat just looking like a base coat, ie a bit plain.

Every time I try a full miniature wash though, I feel like it dilutes the yellow too much. Removes the exact colour balance I was hoping for and just sorta overrides it with the shade that's in the wash. It also makes minis look messy, while it doesn't do that with other colours.

I guess I'm looking for advice or different methods. How do you guys do it?

Used nothing special to make these, just default citadel paints and washes. But they honestly look a lot better than my Imperial Fists, or my Word Bearers, or my Sautekh Necrons.
