How to ask if they’re going to pay me for my hours without saying that explicitly

Hi. Started an internship with my lab this summer but honestly my PIs and mentors aren’t the best about communication, especially with my pay. I got the gist that I am going to be compensated for the summer for my hours, but a lab mate recently told me that the lab doesn’t have enough to pay for all the undergraduate interns (a total fund of 6k for the three of us) for more than 20hrs per week. She’s basically insinuating I shouldn’t work or clock more than 20 hrs a week because I won’t be paid after that.

The issue is that this lab mate has been confidently wrong in the past. She confidently told me I had to travel 6hrs + to fill out paperwork from my university, when in reality I sent out an email to one person and was able to do it from home. Another time she told me I wouldn’t be able to be paid anymore if I switched programs at our uni. Also wrong.

My real question is how do I go about asking my PIs or mentors about this whole 20hr limit thing, or even should I at all? This is my first lab and I don’t want to make it seem like all I care about is the money, however I am a broke college student and I truly do not want to do work I will not be fairly compensated for. If anyone has advice or thoughts it would be so appreciated. Thanks!

transfer to sargent

hi all! potential transfer from the university of rochester. i applied to transfer to BU sargent a few months ago while i was struggling in my first semester and i ended up getting in. i really do enjoy my life as it is in rochester rn: i have friends, a lab, mentors, TA positions, good grades, etc all within my first year of being at rochester. my issues are largely in the fact i wouldn’t want to stay in upstate new york long term, it is a small school with not a lot of students or other schools, i dont really feel challenged by the work or my peers, and i am a little afraid i am not pushing myself. i am a pre-med public health student and for me, BU and UofRochester are on the same par academically speaking so I am not really concerned about that part. the thing that really draws me in is the location, the college town/city (kinda once in a lifetime to experience because when are you gonna be 20 in boston again?), the sheer number of opportunities that exist in boston, and the proximity to home/ease of travel. the things that draw me away is the fear i won’t be competitive with so many people in boston, that i won’t do well/will have trouble adjusting as a transfer, and that my quality of life in such a big school might suffer. i lowk do have to make a decision by tonight so if anyone has any input, it would be so incredibly appreciated!!!

shld i transfer to bu

just got in as a pre med student at sargent! unsure if i should go because the cost is 95k per year which is a little insane. i would be transferring from university of rochester, where tbh a lot of the problems i had before with friends and stuff kinda went away. tuition for me there is like $75k. the main issues i have are with the location which is super far and away from home. not to mention kinda isolated and far from other people and other schools. it’s also a small campus so though there is always stuff to be doing and i do like the campus, it’s not like the lively and fun college experience that i always wanted. other things is that i am doing well at rochester with very involved professors who care, a good community, great research opportunities, great academics, etc. not sure what to do and i lowk have to make a decision by tomorrow. i am still waiting on georgetown to come out but unsure whether or not i will get in (just rejected by brown and tufts.)

Hi! UofR student here staying for research this summer and also because i love it here. i am potentially subletting an apartment on Brooks Ave in the 19th Ward, but I heard it can be sketchy and it varies street by street. Does anyone know how Brooks Ave is crime wise/safety wise? I will likely be living on my own to my knowledge. Thank you!
