Can mods please ban bots and bootlickers?
I am sure I am not alone when I say I didn't come to this sub to argue with morons that love corporations more than videogames.
This sub is called physical games. It's not supposed to be a debate sub. I am not interested in debating the value of physical games with people that support the death of physical media. At the very least these comments are off topic, not to mention needlessly hostile. I don't want anything to do with them and I don't see how they are allowed. These people are coming here specifically to be disruptive. We don't owe them our time.
If you want this community to grow, please get rid of those people that are passionately against all that this community stands for.
Sony discontinuing physical playstation games makes gaming even less accessible to the working class.
We knew it was a matter of time until corpos did this, but I wanted to shed light on this aspect, because it isn't talked about enough imo.
Used games can be sold/ bought on places like vinted, shared between friends, given away etc. As such they present a way for a lot of people to play videogames without paying ludicrous prices to the gangsters that control the industry.
While pc is overall cheaper for games, with options such as piracy and cheaper digital prices compared to console stores (not to mention no internet tax), it requires the initial hardware cost that most people simply do not have. Getting a last gen console, specifically a playstation, and getting some used games, was and remains the only way for someone who isn't filthy rich to play "current" big budget games. It's how a lot of us grew up and got into gaming: some kids had a console and we would rent/ copy / borrow games. This will now stop forever.
People seem to be focusing on game preservation, and while that is important, in the digital age we have the tools (piracy/ emulation) to preserve just about any game that's ever been on the market. The pricing and accessibility of games is the thing to focus on here imo. Which, by the way, prices are only going to keep rising with the elimination of retail and secondary market.
Anyway, gaming is already inaccessible for most but i think for some this will be the final nail in the coffin. Piracy, emulation etc need to be more broadly advocated for and taught to people.
Anyway to play in japanese with english subtitles?
I have the playstation version and there is actually a toggle to change voices and text in the main menu but the former seems to be placeholder/disabled and can't be changed from english. I have a european version.
Is it different in other versions/platforms? Steam for example?
edit:
UPDATE for anyone googling:
Apparently the Japanese version of the game, called psycho break, does allow for English language including subtitles with Japanese audio. So best bet is playing that version, which can be bought on playstation both physical and PS store. On stream it's not so easy to buy from another region, though I am sure there are other ways for enthusiasts to get the Japanese version.
HOWEVER the Japanese version is censored due to some weird rating system that's in place in Japan. Specifically: in the western version there is slider in the main menu for gore on or off. In the Japanese the gore is off by default, and there is a separate "gore dlc" to add gore that's on some age restricted versions of the game.
The bad news about this is that I don't think the gore dlc can be simply added via the PSN store. The good news is that it's relatively minor but noticeable stuff. Whenever there's dismemberment, it's absent. There is still blood and stuff.
To give an example, the hospital intro is identical at first but then when the chainsaw guy is cutting up a corpse and dragging it around it's not only the top half in the Japanese version, there's legs awkwardly placed there to cover the insides of his belly. Also the beheading death sequence goes dark once the head is removed. So specific things have been touched over.
There are also some reports that say that even with the gore dlc, some things are still missing from the Japanese version but I didn't verify it this.
Now, I did find some used Japanese playstation versions that are supposed to have the gore dlc but they were over priced and who knows if they really have it. It seems that on playstation at least the only solution seems to be playing the psycho break version of the game which has things censored here and there.
It's disappointing that there doesn't seem to be enough interest for a mod to have the definitive version of the game available because, despite what people assured me, the English dub is clearly a dub and not the best. The voice acting in English I would describe as charmingly bad, at the risk of burying this thread again after it was brought back with upvotes. But I would probably not recommend the censored version for someone's first playthrough.
What we would probably need is a mod of the Japanese version, Psycho Break, that already has English subs and voices available, with restored gore. It should not be difficult to implement. But I don't think such thing currently exists.
Anyway, Tiny Tim out
