Watching The Evil Within's opening like it's a nature documentary, zero clue what's about to hit me.

Can't pick up bottles?

Just started playing The Evil Within on Xbox Series S and can't seem to pick up any of the bottles when they appear. No prompt shows up no matter how close I get to them or what angle I look at them, and just hitting A does nothing either. I restarted the game to see if that'd do something but same problem just happened again.

I also can't check my inventory or run with LB, but I figured that was because I was still in a semi-tutorial stage. The bottles actually look like the game wants me to pick them up.

Any suggestions?

I thought you couldn’t download this game on PS anymore lol

For the longest time, I thought you couldn’t get this game on PS store anymore, because every time I go to it on my console, it only says “wishlist” and “follow.” No buy option. But today while looking for a used disc to buy online, instead I found a PS Store link on Chrome that had the game on sale? And for barely over $5, I couldn’t believe it. All the DLC I bought way back in the day started downloading automatically too. I haven’t been able to re-enjoy this game in years, here goes the rest of my day! 😂

Anyway to play in japanese with english subtitles?

I have the playstation version and there is actually a toggle to change voices and text in the main menu but the former seems to be placeholder/disabled and can't be changed from english. I have a european version.

Is it different in other versions/platforms? Steam for example?

edit:

UPDATE for anyone googling:

Apparently the Japanese version of the game, called psycho break, does allow for English language including subtitles with Japanese audio. So best bet is playing that version, which can be bought on playstation both physical and PS store. On stream it's not so easy to buy from another region, though I am sure there are other ways for enthusiasts to get the Japanese version.

HOWEVER the Japanese version is censored due to some weird rating system that's in place in Japan. Specifically: in the western version there is slider in the main menu for gore on or off. In the Japanese the gore is off by default, and there is a separate "gore dlc" to add gore that's on some age restricted versions of the game.

The bad news about this is that I don't think the gore dlc can be simply added via the PSN store. The good news is that it's relatively minor but noticeable stuff. Whenever there's dismemberment, it's absent. There is still blood and stuff.

To give an example, the hospital intro is identical at first but then when the chainsaw guy is cutting up a corpse and dragging it around it's not only the top half in the Japanese version, there's legs awkwardly placed there to cover the insides of his belly. Also the beheading death sequence goes dark once the head is removed. So specific things have been touched over.

There are also some reports that say that even with the gore dlc, some things are still missing from the Japanese version but I didn't verify it this.

Now, I did find some used Japanese playstation versions that are supposed to have the gore dlc but they were over priced and who knows if they really have it. It seems that on playstation at least the only solution seems to be playing the psycho break version of the game which has things censored here and there.

It's disappointing that there doesn't seem to be enough interest for a mod to have the definitive version of the game available because, despite what people assured me, the English dub is clearly a dub and not the best. The voice acting in English I would describe as charmingly bad, at the risk of burying this thread again after it was brought back with upvotes. But I would probably not recommend the censored version for someone's first playthrough.

What we would probably need is a mod of the Japanese version, Psycho Break, that already has English subs and voices available, with restored gore. It should not be difficult to implement. But I don't think such thing currently exists.

Anyway, Tiny Tim out

Post 3 gameplay tips for the First Evil Within game

Here are mine:

  1. Shoot enemies in the legs and then use matches when they are down. Saves ammo.

  2. Don't be afraid to play on casual difficulty. The game is really hard for some people.

  3. The game frequently uses trial and error and kills you instantly without warning. So be prepared to replay certain sections over and over again. Fortunately, checkpoints are reasonably placed.

I was hating the first half of the game. But fortunately I picked up tips here and elsewhere on how to play better. Almost at the end now, in chapter 15.

Should I buy the game on Steam again?

I hear this game is a masterpiece of survival horror genre, and I would really like to play this game. I remember getting both 1 and 2 for free on epic games store.

However, despite my relatively decent PC, this game keeps crashing, freezing, and is basically unplayable (like its even really hard to launch the game). I searched the subreddit, and people seem to have similar issue with the Epic version.

Is this related to the Epic version, or is the Steam version will be the same?

I played TEW2 for the first time (Spoiler)

I need to get a few thoughts and feelings off my chest. I absolutely adore the first game and all of its DLCs, but I always avoided the second game because people kept saying that fans of the first one often dislike the sequel. I already knew the story, but I finally wanted to experience it myself and well... I really do not like the game.

To me, it feels like a huge step backwards compared to the first one. Just wasted potential:

>!• TEW has one of the best intros I have ever seen in a horror game. Waking up in that claustrophobic slaughterhouse is incredibly effective. Even if you only have to walk forward, the lighting, the atmosphere, and the fact that the Sadist can instantly kill you if you are not careful makes it so intense. There is no handholding here. That whole section still makes me nervous every time, even though I already know what to do. That desperate limping toward the elevator never gets old. TEW2 starts in a similar way, but it feels like a recycled and weaker version. It is immediately obvious what you have to do. I also think it is disappointing how little effort was put into the storytelling. I should not have to buy a comic just to understand what happened to Sebastian during those three years. I do not mind buying the comic itself, but players should not be punished for not knowing it exists, especially since there was barely any promotion or even a hint that these comics existed.!<

>!• I noticed right away that they changed a lot of things people complained about in the first game. I never had problems with the stamina system, and I liked the small but clear weapon system. The crafting system in TEW2 felt like too much for me. I also think the controls are not as smooth as in the first game.!<

>!• TEW1 forces you to really learn and understand the game, and it feels rewarding when you slowly improve. Memorizing enemy movement patterns and carefully placing traps can make a huge difference. That strategic aspect is completely missing for me in TEW2. I missed attacks so many times for no reason, and the enemies move around so wildly that it just becomes frustrating.!<

>!• I never really felt like I was playing a horror game. It felt more like a Days Gone DLC where it is always nighttime and someone stole my motorcycle... q.q The story itself is actually good, but it is told in a very shallow way. I think the biggest problem is that this time the player already knows the world is not real. Because of that, there was no real horror feeling for me. The city was also way too colorful. I liked Beacon Hospital much more. And those ten different puzzle sections... meh. I preferred the timing based stuff from the Kidman DLCs.!<

>!• It was nice to see how often the first game was mentioned. Every time it happened, it just reminded me of a game I would rather be playing instead.!<

>!• It was pretty obvious they were saving Joseph and Ruvik for a third game. quietly crying They really turned my boy Ruvik into target practice at a shooting range...!<

>!• Mobius is an absolute joke in this game. In the first game, they were presented as this unstoppable organization that was close to world domination. The Administrator was shown as this powerful man who could manipulate and convince anyone, even Ruvik. Then in TEW2, the Administrator suddenly discovers smokey eye makeup. I am not judging, even a businessman can highlight his eyes a little. Apparently he also recruited the Men in Black…!<>!The fact that every employee has a chip inside them, including the boss himself, so they can instantly be killed if necessary had me laughing for five straight minutes. It makes absolutely no sense. And Kidman removes hers and nobody notices? Nobody is monitoring this? This giant organization that spent 100 years searching for eternal life gets destroyed with the push of a button.!<

>!• All the new characters are boring. Torres is basically Temu Lara Croft. There is literally a whole team watching and listening to everything happening inside STEM, and she just casually tells Sebastian that Kidman plans to save Lily LOL. The moment that happened, I already knew Seb and Lily would be the only survivors at the end.!<

>!• Everything feels the same all the time. Even when revisiting old locations from the beginning, the world barely changes. The enemy design was also nowhere near as good as in the first game. Visually it felt like they were trying to copy Laura's design over and over again. So many monsters with long black hair. Why?! I did like the marshmallow monster though. But those lava golems... come on.!<

>!• Stefano Valentini was incredible to look at. I absolutely loved his character, his backstory, his trauma, everything about him. The moment I finally started feeling connected to him, he dies. WHY did this game need 2 villains? 3 if we count Myra. Stefano had so much potential as the main antagonist, but it feels like he only gets five minutes of screentime. And why did Myra look like a Ruvik clone?!<

>!• Is it just me, or does the story have a lot of plot holes? After finishing one quest, you find Sebastian's revolver from the first game, and he greets it like an old friend. Seb, you never actually owned that gun. You stole it from Connelly, and that only happened inside STEM. Lily should not have been so easy to kidnap inside STEM either. She is the Core. Like Ruvik, she should have massive influence over the world itself. Maybe Mobius somehow suppressed her powers, but other people want her specifically because controlling her means controlling STEM. She should be able to actively affect the world, but she never really does.!<

>!• Also, Lily should have supernatural abilities now. Every former STEM Core has them. Ruvik used those powers to escape the asylum with Leslie's body. So why does Sebastian not have Ruvik's mark on his hand like everyone else? Myra and the Administrator do not have it either. Unless I missed something, you only see it at the end with Juli. And come on, it was obvious Mobius would never let Sebastian and Lily just walk away.!<

>!• I did enjoy the final boss fight though. Having to face the Sadist, Laura, and the Keeper again was awesome, and Sebastian saying "Is that all you've got?" afterward was such a great moment. Also, my GIRL Tatiana returning made me really happy.!<

Overall, this experience reminded me a lot of the Tomb Raider reboot series. The first game was great. It had a few flaws here and there, but exploring the world and collecting things was genuinely fun. Then the second game became an avalanche of what felt like 1000 collectibles, an oversized world, terrible controls, a story with no logic, and side characters I stopped caring about after five minutes.

TEW2 felt the same to me. They clearly tried a lot of new things and listened to criticism from the first game. But as someone who loved the original, I did not want a completely different experience that ignores what made the first game special in the first place. More does not automatically mean better.

Do I really need 10 different pistols? No. The revolver and the Magnum were already enough. It is honestly a shame, because I think they could have done so much more with this game.

But who knows. The third Tomb Raider reboot game ended up being really good again. Maybe one day we will get TEW3, and maybe they will learn from this. I still have hope :D Give me Joseph and Ruvik back.
