Hi redditor buddies. I've seen many surgeons and some of them don't like that. There is one who I am leaning towards going with because he is suggesting a smaller surgery for me given the fact that I've had chronic lumbar stenosis were almost 10 years. I'm 74. He explained what procedure he thought would be the best for me based on the fact that my l4-05 disc is almost completely obliterated. The only place I have spondylosis is it l3-l4 and that's where he would fuse. The rest he would go l3 to l5 laminectomy and no fusion except at l3-l4. When I had a few more questions he seemed annoyed and said he's explained it a few times. Any suggestions on how to get the answers I want from him without creating a tense situation? I know two people who had very good surgeries with him. Thanks for any ideas .

It sounds like a funny question, but I'm one of the threads here people were saying to make sure you find a " good surgeon." I followed up on recommendations from other people and met with surgeons but everyone's spine is different. So how do you know the real scoop on a surgeon? I think the simpler your issue is obviously it's easier for any surgeon. So I guess my real question is how do I find a surgeon who is skillful with complicated for high risk spines which I have been told by falling in that category. If anyone reading this as been told their spine is very complicated, and they needed more than two levels fused please get in touch with me by a chat. The other question is experience / years the surgeon has been working. Recently I was referred by a very well-known surgeon to one of his young colleagues. I looked up his credentials and he went to the best schools but he's only been doing spine surgery for 9 years. I'm not sure if that's enough time to really know how to deal with complications that can come up. Any opinions?
I was told by a spinal rehab specialist who's been working with people post-surgery for 40 years that she thought the recovery was quicker with ALIF/360 done with a long posterior fusion like three levels or more. Can anyone speak to that? I also have osteopenia which makes fusion a little more risky also and I think the alif might be easier for fusion but I can't quite get the answer from surgeons.
Has anyone had spine surgery at HSS in New York and are they as great as alll the hype about them says?
I have posted here before. I'm 74 have been told by a few surgeons that I have a complicated spine. My main symptom is that I have throbbing in my calf muscles after I walk. I've had it for a long time. I'm deciding between a few surgeons but it would be helpful to hear from someone who has had successful surgery for symptoms in the legs. I really don't have pain in my back just a lot of compression / stenosis / degenerated discs. If you have a particular surgeon you have to private message me the name. Those are the rules. Thanks

I have unusual symptoms, not severe, but they do impact my quality of life, however after speaking with my pain management Dr who treats lots of people post fusion or laminectomy, I am concerned that fusion may not really help me, but actually might create more problems. He has a atleast two patients who came out worse after fusion. I still can't get a consistent answer from surgeons about why fusion would help me. I have stenosis, DDD, foraminal stenosis and osteoporosis. If I post my MRI report I wonder if someone could offer educated information, not just what surgeons tell them. I know that's a high bar, requiring someone who really knows about the spine, different surgeries etc. Just for reference, I had a laminotomy in 2024 that only helped for three months. I have to figure out how to post the report if anyone can offer guidance that would be appreciated.
I put off fusion for about 3 years, perhaps more after I had a laminotomy that only provided 3 months of relief. I've interviewed many surgeons all telling me I need fusion from s1 to l3 to get rid of the throbbing in my legs after I walk which is my main symptom as well as right lateral thigh pain. How do I ask them what a realistic outcome will be and how many patients they've had who develop other pain like numbness or foot drop. How do I get honest answers?
Has anyone been told they have permanent nerve damage because they didn't have surgery for their stenosis in time? I've had stenosis for about 7 years which wasn't so bad in the beginning but has gone downhill. I went to get an EMG and they found I have nerve damage. I'm looking for a surgeon who will give me an honest answer whether fusion can help if there's nerve damage. Has anyone had this?

It was hinted that I have waited too long to do fusion for lumbar stenosis, spondylosthesis and radiculopathy and will have a lesser outcome, but some Dr's still think I should go ahead soon before it keeps getting worse. Has anyone had this situation and how are you coping with it?

I was recommended to one of their surgeons and have heard of some others there. I've only met one person who had surgery with one of them but her spine was much less complicated than mine. I have osteoporosis and degenerative disc disease as well as stenosis and foraminal stenosis.
I spine physiatrist/rehab Dr I saw recommended two surgeons at Northwell/Lenox Hill. I haven't heard much about Lenox Hill for spine surgery, but will go for appointment for consultation. I interviewed several at NYU, each one giving me a different recommendation or type of fusion which was very confusing. Please DM if you have experience at Lenox Hill. Thanks
