Which 1/8 Race RTR to buy in 2026?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to get into a 1/8 electric race buggy and I’m still unsure which RTR to buy. I’m not trying to chase the absolute fastest lap times. I just want to have some fun on our local dirt and carpet tracks. My other cars are not really suitable for that, and they are also too old, so replacement parts are hard to get.

I don’t want to spend the money to build a kit myself, and I’ve been looking at the used market for a while now without much luck. Therefore, I’m looking for an easy RTR option around €600.

The three cars I’m currently considering are:

  • Kyosho Inferno MP10e RTR
  • Losi 8IGHT-XE 4S RTR
  • SWORKz Apollo II eEVO RTR

The Kyosho MP10e RTR is probably the one I’m most drawn to right now. I really like the layout and weight distribution. What puts me off a bit is the hardware/tooling situation. I’ve seen Phillips mentioned in the included tools/hardware context, and for a race-style 1/8 buggy at this price point that feels a bit disappointing.

The Losi 8IGHT-XE RTR also looks very strong on paper, especially because it comes with a sensored brushless system.

The SWORKz Apollo II eEVO RTR also seems really interesting because it looks very close to a proper race kit and seems to have very strong components out of the box.

I’ve seen a lot of positive videos about all of these cars, but most reviews make every car sound like “the best RTR ever,” so I’m looking for longer-term owner feedback.

My use case is mostly fun driving, not serious racing. Some track use, mixed surfaces like clay/dirt and carpet/astro, and maybe occasional parking lot runs. Durability, easy maintenance, and predictable handling are more important to me than ultimate lap times.

I’d like something that feels like a real race buggy, but is still suitable for a beginner/amateur.

For people who are more informed than myself: which one would you recommend as the best long-term allrounder?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for a very specific driving experience on asphalt/parking lots. I want a car that is fast and precise (30-40 km/h+), but capable of controlled powerslides using weight transfer and trail-braking—think Ken Block or Rallycross style.

The Goal: Technical driving where the car doesn't just "glue" to the road and traction roll, but slides predictably when I initiate it. I'm looking for a RTR package and I'm a huge fan of JDM bodies (Skyline, Supra, RX-7, etc.).

I’m currently torn between two paths and would love your input:

  • AWD Touring Car (e.g., Team Magic E4JR II): Using hard rubber tires or high-speed drift slicks. The plan is to use the drivetrain stability to pull the car out of slides. Is an AWD touring platform the best "all-rounder" for high-speed rotation?
  • RWD Drifter Conversion (e.g., MST RMX 2.5): Taking a dedicated RWD chassis but putting grippier tires on it to increase speed. My main concern here is the drift-specific geometry. I'm worried that the extreme steering lock, high scrub radius, and near-zero Ackermann angles will make the car completely twitchy or uncontrollable at 40 km/h. Does this geometry even work once you add real grip and momentum, or does it just become a spin-out machine?

What I'm NOT looking for: Slow "Scale Drifting" on PVC pipes. I want that "Off-road Buggy on Asphalt" feeling where you can actually use the throttle to steer through a fast corner.

Has anyone done a build like this? Which platform handles the transition from grip to slide better at higher speeds? Any specific RTR recommendations with nice JDM shells?

Thanks in advance!
