Why did my buttercream develop white spots after sitting out?

I made this cake (2nd pic) yesterday, and had some leftover buttercream sitting in the bowl overnight (1st pic), to discard this morning; I noticed that the green on the cake started to develop white spots before serving it, and the buttercream that was left over has white spots all over it as well. Any clue as to why this happened?

Edit: solved, thanks for the great comments and tips!

I think where I went wrong, was thinking that my butter was too soft as I was beating it, and I actually started cooling off the bowl as the butter was beating. It may also be the butter that was stuck in the beaters, and trying to clean the beaters off too much.. and I bet you those little bits were the little bits stuck on the beaters that I incorporated too late into the process. Lessons learned 💕🙌
