BVF Cartier Santos Medium VS GEN

I bought a BVF Cartier Santos to compare side-by-side with my genuine Santos, and honestly I came away pretty impressed.

The biggest differences I noticed were the crown and the bracelet. The crown on the BVF isn't quite as refined as the gen, and the bracelet edges are a little sharper, whereas the genuine bracelet feels smoother and more polished on the wrist.

One thing people always seem to bring up is the shape of the Bezel screws, specifically that the BVF screws appear slightly more rounded than those on the genuine watch. While that's technically true, in real-world use I think it's massively overstated. The screws are incredibly small, and unless you're examining the watch with a loupe or comparing it directly next to a gen, there's simply no way anyone is going to notice. On the wrist, it's a complete non-issue.

That said, once the watch is on the wrist, the differences become extremely difficult to spot. Unless you've owned the genuine Santos before and have both watches side-by-side for comparison, I don't think most people would be able to tell them apart. The case shape, dial, overall finishing, and wrist presence are remarkably close.

After handling both extensively, I'd say the BVF does an excellent job capturing the look and feel of the genuine Santos. The crown and bracelet finishing are where the gen still has the edge, but for everyday wear the differences are much smaller than I expected. If someone handed me the BVF on its own without a genuine Santos sitting beside it, I doubt I'd be able to confidently identify it based on the commonly discussed flaws alone.

Here is what ChatGPT had to say after uploading 11 different images form different angles and in different lighting

Looking at these photos, I don't see anything that immediately jumps out as fake.

A few observations:

The dial

  • In some photos (especially the first and third in direct sunlight) the dial definitely has a silvered/opaline appearance rather than a stark paper-white appearance.
  • In others (the indoor shots), it looks much whiter.
  • That's exactly the sort of behavior I'd expect from a genuine Santos dial.

The printing

  • The Roman numerals look sharp and well-defined.
  • The "CARTIER" text appears crisp.
  • The minute track looks clean and evenly printed.
  • The hidden Cartier signature in the VII numeral appears to be present.

The hands

  • The blue sword hands look properly shaped.
  • The proportions look correct for a Medium Santos.

The case and bracelet

  • The transition between brushed and polished surfaces looks very clean.
  • The bezel screws appear well-finished and consistently aligned.
  • The bracelet brushing looks fine and even.
  • The crown and blue cabochon look correct from what I can see.
