Swarnim Wagle left the Nepali Congress (NC) in late March 2023, primarily due to repeated humiliation, insults, and obstruction by party president Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife Arzu Rana Deuba.

He announced his departure via a Facebook post and a message to key NC leaders (including general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, plus Shekhar Koirala and Govinda Raj Pokharel. In it, he criticized the party’s degeneration into “an incompetent gang of nepotism” and family dominance, contrasting it with its historic legacy under leaders like BP Koirala.

Gagan Thapa (then NC general secretary) reacted strongly and critically during the by-election campaign. He and fellow general secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma led NC efforts in Tanahun and publicly lashed out at Wagle.

• Thapa accused Wagle of being a “tourist candidate” who returned after earning money and a pension abroad while Thapa “fought for democracy” in Nepal.
• He portrayed Wagle’s move as opportunistic and petty, urging voters not to support him.
• This marked a sharp turn, as the two had previously been allies (Wagle supported Thapa’s campaigns and reportedly viewed him as a future PM).

The tone was seen as unusually harsh even by some of Thapa’s supporters and was attributed partly to internal NC pressures on Thapa’s faction.

Wagle went on to win the by-election decisively (and was re-elected from the same seat in 2026).

Gagan has previously won from Kathmandu 5 after RSP decided to not field their candidate from this area as a silent way to support the Khasi. However, he left his long held constituency for some reason in the 2082 election and went on to lose from Sarlahi.

Gokul Baskota a politician from Amale was the Minister of Communication and Information Technology. He got caught on audio negotiating for a Rs700 million "commission" with the agent for a Swiss company, according to a leaked audio recording obtained by the news portal, hamrokura.com.

​Recently, eager Congress cadres across all 77 districts had the monumental opportunity to witness the rollout of the newly upgraded Congress 2.0. While this was a historic and deeply moving opportunity for internal party democracy, we encountered one slight, minor problem:

​Some of us were stuck in traffic on the Ring Road, some of us were waiting in line to renew our passport applications, some of us were genuinely distracted trying to figure out how the coalition arithmetic changed three times in a single Tuesday, and quite a few of us frankly forgot to log into the central digital membership update portal entirely.

​Please do not interpret our lack of participation, our blank ballots, or the massive drop in the proportional vote count as a sign of disinterest on our part. We love the classic, unpatched, stable version of the party. The current 2.0 feels only so-so, and the people have spoken by dropping our beloved party to 38 seats. Let me tell you, despite all the struggles of a Kangressi, seeing Gagan Dada running our party has been the biggest struggle so far.

​Therefore, we have a humble request. We ask that you disregard the current party charter, hit the override button on the Central Working Committee decisions, and launch Congress 3.0 immediately.

We have movies like Nai Navannu La 6 and Dhoom 4 (Nepali version) and Congress 2.0, honestly, sounds out of date. Thus, we request you to come with Congress 3.0 before Nai Navannu La 7 hits the big screen.

Politically affiliated student unions - college bunk to learn bhrastachar and gundagardi

Nepal's Free Student Unions (FSU) - mainly the wings of major political parties like NSU (Nepali Congress), ANNFSU (UML), and ANNISU-R (Maoist) were once part of democratic movements. Today, many have become platforms for corruption, extortion, and power plays that hurt actual students. Have these student bodies done any good to the educational institutes?

I remember in our university some students from UML's student body put black paint (kalo moso) in a professor's face. Also, we've had exam cancellations because some student union gunda was not well prepared. The countless acts of corruptions that happens inside these unions sometimes felt like a trailer for the real world. Unions collude with campus staff to siphon money from construction, scholarships, and student welfare funds. There's the bamboo fence scam: Leaders repeatedly "rebuild" cheap bamboo fences (while claiming wall construction budgets), pocketing the difference with fake invoices.

Apparently, these acts of hooliganism are a rite of passage. A sacred ceremony, if you will, to become the Hagan Thapa and Bhogates of the future. Our Hagane dai was a heavyweight in these activities from his union days itself known to pocket 30-40 lakhs in the Trichandra Garden Scam (in 2055 BS). As recently as 2025, campuses like Shankardev were padlocked over allegations of FSU presidents misusing funds for mass fake admissions of "poor/backward" students. Elections often involve clashes, assaults on staff/professors, and hooliganism. Unions enjoy protection from parent political parties, leading to a culture of impunity. They disrupt university management, shut down offices, and influence appointments through money and muscle.

Not all leaders/students are like this though some genuinely fight for student issues and independent candidates have won in places like IOE Pulchowk. But the systemic problems are undeniable and widely reported. This rot starts at the university level and feeds into national politics. Real students suffer delayed exams, poor facilities, disrupted education.

So... how were the student unions during your college days? What good came out of the whole charade of politics and social service? Is the government wrong to axe student unions?
