Can I become a graphic designer even though I didn’t finish a multimedia course?

I’m interested in trying out graphic design, but I’m not sure if it’s realistic since I didn’t finish a multimedia/graphic design-related course. I also don’t have any prior work experience in the field.
My background is mostly in BPO, which doesn’t really relate to the graphic artist jobs I want to apply for. I know it’s probably going to be difficult, especially starting from scratch, but I’d like to try and see if I can make it work.
For those who are self-taught or came from a completely different background, how did you get started? Is a degree really necessary, or can a good portfolio and skills make up for it? Pls advise ☹️

is it okay to build a career outside the course you graduated from?

problem/goal:
i graduated architecture and now work in bpo. i'm still overthinking because i feel like i wasted so much time, effort, and money on a degree i might never even use. but honestly, i don't see myself working in the industry. sweldo pa lang, mapapaurong ka na hahahaha.

context:
i'm curious about people who also graduated from a course they didn't pursue. i want to know how things turned out for people who chose a different career after graduating.

previous attempts:
i haven't really tried pursuing architecture since graduating because i don't see myself working in the industry. i'm currently working outside my degree, but i'm still unsure if i'm making the right choice.
