

Home printed dial inserts
Saw a guy on a watch forum printing custom dials onto thin aluminum discs with a UV printer. The detail looked legit even at that size. Right now my only options for custom dials are ordering from Asia (3 week wait) or Etsy ($40+ each).
If home printing actually works at this scale I'd rather do that. Anyone tried it.
5 hour CNC carve on a $60 piece of walnut, power died at hour 4
Was doing a detailed 3D topographic map carve on a 24x18 piece of black walnut for a client. Ball nose finish pass was looking incredible, super detailed river valleys with clean ridgelines, everything dialed in perfectly with about an hour left on a 5 hour job.
Power dropped. Machine lost position, spindle stopped, and when it came back up I rehomed it but the Z offset was different and the piece had shifted slightly against the clamps during the sudden stop. I could see exactly where the toolpath stopped and where it tried to resume, and on a 3D topographic piece any discontinuity is immediately obvious. The carve is completely unusable. $60 in walnut, 4 hours of machine time, and about 3 hours of CAM setup to generate the toolpaths, all gone.
This is the second time this has happened. First time was on a cheaper piece of pine so I ate it, but this time it's a commission with a deadline and I have to buy new stock and rerun the whole thing from scratch.
Ordering a portable power station (anker solix s2000) tonight. My machine draws about 500W under load and if the UPS mode can catch a power blip fast enough to keep the controller alive then sudden drops stop being catastrophic. Extended outages are less of an issue because I can pause the job and wait, but it's the sudden losses that kill you because the machine loses its entire coordinate system instantly.
