let me just start by saying I have grown up with dogs and I typically adore dogs. I rescued dogs in the past. I don't currently own a dog because I stay in a townhome complex and work two jobs so my lifestyle just doesn't really accommodate one right now. My partner has a mini poodle we will call curly. curly is a really sweet dog, but he is really stupid. and I say that with all love. like he will see me across the house and come barreling towards me full speed and run into something because he's not paying attention to anything other than me.

i like that he's an energetic dog because I am a very active person and like to go for dogs and walks outside. he is also trainable in the fence that he is great with commands like sit, lay down, off, and fun ones like do your little dance.

however he frequently uses the bathroom inside the house and he barks in the middle of the night. these are the two things that make me feel like I am incompatible with him. 1) using the bathroom in the middle of the house: we take him outside regularly and he will still use the bathroom an hour later mid play session or left unattended. ive literally never seen a dog do that. he makes zero indication he needs to go outside he will just stop and go to the bathroom to do his business after we take him to go outside it's mostly poop, but I've also seen him stop mid play session to go pee after we had just taken him outside to pee.

the thing that bothers me the most though is the barking in the middle of the night. he barks at literally nothing. i assume that maybe he's barking for attention because he does not like being in his kennel at night, but he has to be in his kennel at night because otherwise he will chew things up and destroy them. he messed up my boyfriend's floorboards for example. now I know the barking in the middle of the night would aggravate anybody I'm sure, but for me especially it is a health hazard because I have epilepsy and one of my seizure triggers is sleep wake transitions. usually after a full night sleep I can wake up and it's fine, but if I am mid sleep cycle for some reason it causes seizures. If I am woken up unexpectedly from a loud noise it causes me to have seizures. I have since had two seizures since being woken up from this dog in the middle of the night.

my boyfriend takes my health seriously, and put curly in a training school to try to mitigate the barking. however while he does great when I'm not there the second I come over it doesn't matter if we follow the same routine or not he will start misbehaving all over again. he had been good about the barking for the last couple of nights, but last night he started again and I simply don't know what to do anymore. I already changed up my medication routine to try to help minimize the seizures. I am to the point where I am refusing now again to sleep at his house but I know it is not a sustainable solution if we want to live together in the future. I know I can't realistically ask him to choose between me and his dog, so is this gonna be the end of our relationship?

I made a few posts about how I 1) kinda hated Zonisamide/Zonegran and 2) was extremely anxious to get on Lamotrigine/Lamictal

Well, it turns out that combining the meds was quite literally the best thing I could've done for myself.

I put it off for like two years because the idea of change, managing a titration schedule, and risking something huge like SJS, stressed me so bad. But it was quite literally the combination that was going to work out the best for me.

The Zonisamide related symptoms that bothered me the most? Practically gone. The Lamotrigine cleared up the brain fog to near 0. I finally have my brain back after 3 nearly 4 years of experimenting with different meds.

I am on 200mgs of Zonisamide and 100mgs of Lamotrigine. We agreed that if I am stable and doing well symptom-wise at these lower doses, there's honestly no reason to change things. It's been 10 weeks of no seizures.. we'll see!
