This is most likely going to rile up the religious crowd; why would they do this?
This is obviously going to rile up the religious sects and the opposition.
They are going to frame the government as anti Buddhists

Some of these guys openly admit they couldn't get the kind of attention or relationships they wanted back home, so they come to Asian countries like Sri Lanka because they believe women here will be easier to attract, date or sleep with.
What I find more interesting is the other side of it. Some Sri Lankan women seem to treat these men as an upgrade simply because they're white, foreign and have a Western passport. The guy doesn't necessarily have to be particularly attractive or impressive by local standards, being white itself can apparently add social value.
So you end up with this strange exchange: the man comes here because he believes he has more dating power than he does back home, while the woman may see him as higher status simply because he's white and foreign.
Obviously, interracial relationships aren't the problem. If two people genuinely like each other, great.
But if the attraction is basically “he's white and has a foreign passport, therefore he's better”, while his attraction is “Sri Lankan women are easier than women back home,” that's not exactly the romantic story people think it is.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I've noticed this enough to wonder whether anyone else sees it too.
Finally justice has taken place.
I've noticed this, not everyone, but a noticeable number of Sri Lankan parents naming their kids very white/Western-sounding names. Girls get names like Alicia, Jessica, etc. Boys get ones like Noah, Liam, etc.
You never see white/European parents giving their kids Sri Lankan-sounding names, but somehow it's only our people doing the reverse as we are trying hard to look cool or get accepted by whites.
What's the significance behind it?
Unfortunately, just saw a video on Facebook of a guy throwing a cat high into the air. The cat falls onto a house and looks like it might have been killed or seriously injured. The person filming is laughing the whole time.
These kinds of videos keep popping up. People post them openly on Facebook with zero fear of any consequences. No one gets charged, no one gets banned, nothing happens.
Sri Lankans love to claim being religious. People talk about compassion, karma, etc. But then this is what we see on social media every other day. Animals get abused for fun and it’s treated like entertainment.
Is there actually any proper law against animal cruelty here that gets enforced in Sri Lanka? Or is it just empty talk? Why can people film and post this stuff with no repercussions while the rest of us just watch and feel sick?
Even a good thing like this is kicked down just because they are trying to garner some votes. Come on man.
Are there any straight women in Sri Lanka? Like actually?
All I keep hearing is how this girl and her friends are (or were) dating other women; long term, short term, situationships, whatever. Cool for them, do whatever. But at this point I’m legit wondering where the straight ones are.
I’ve also come across enough takes about dating bisexual women; how after some time some of them get the urge to explore or reconnect with women. Honestly, not every guy is automatically okay with that. I’m not saying that’s everyone’s experience, but it’s something that comes up a lot in conversations related bisexual women.
Just genuinely curious what the actual vibe is like out there, especially outside the usual circles.
Straight women of Sri Lanka (or people who know them), where y’all at?
I've noticed something in my own social circle that made me think. Most of the guys I know are still single, while a lot of the women are already in relationships. Obviously that's anecdotal, but it turns out it's not completely at odds with survey data.
For example, a Pew Research survey found that among Americans aged 18–29, 63% of men reported being single, compared with only 34% of women. That's a huge gap.
It seems to be somewhat prevalent in Asian countries as well, like Sri Lanka.
So it raises a question: Who are these women dating?
Considering that there are more women than men in Sri Lanka; are multiple women dating the same person or is it something else?
Every time the Israel work program for Sri Lankans comes up, the same comments flood in: “genocde supporters,” “how can they work for those people,” “couldn’t be me.” Easy to say when you’re comfortable, online, and not the one trying to keep a family afloat.
Most of the people taking these jobs aren’t making geopolitical statements. They’re taking one of the few realistic paths to higher wages so they can send money home, pay school fees, build a house, or just stop drowning. Judging them from a privileged bubble while they carry the actual economic pressure is peak online morality. Remittances keep a lot of households running and the country stable.
Reddit in particular is wildly out of touch on this (and many things). It’s an echo chamber of people who’ve never had to choose between principle and survival. Outside this bubble, ordinary Sri Lankans understand why someone would take the work. But as always, Redditors knows what's best!
A total of 104 low-floor buses purchased for the upcoming Lanka Metro Transit project have arrived in Sri Lanka.
The buses are expected to be deployed when the Lanka Metro Transit project is launched in September.
The low-floor buses have been introduced to improve accessibility, particularly for elderly passengers and persons with disabilities, while also enhancing the overall public transport experience.
Authorities are expected to provide further details on the rollout and operation of the new bus service ahead of the project's official launch.
I'm curious if it's just me, but over the past year I've noticed what seems like a significant increase in the number of Chinese nationals around Colombo 3 (Kollupitiya) and the surrounding areas.
I see them on public transport, at supermarkets, walking around the neighbourhood, and I've also noticed several Chinese-run shops and businesses that either weren't there before or have opened recently.
Maybe I just wasn't paying attention before, but compared to a year ago it feels like a noticeable change.
Has anyone else observed this? Does anyone know what's driving it; business, long-term residents, or something else?
I've noticed that Sri Lankan-related subreddits tend to attract a disproportionately large number of liberal and self-described "progressive" users. It often feels like if you express an opinion that doesn't align with their worldview, you're immediately downvoted into oblivion. Instead of engaging with the argument, many are quick to throw around labels like "incel," "backwards," or "you're the reason this country isn't developing." It's comical.
There also seems to be a sense of frustration or resentment, perhaps because Sri Lanka is still a socially conservative country and the majority of people don't necessarily share or accept many of their social views. As a result, these subreddits can sometimes feel like echo chambers where dissenting opinions are dismissed rather than discussed.
Apart from a very few companies which you can only get into if you have connections, it seems like after COVID the IT industry here is just falling off year by year.
AI, Paycuts, layoffs, have to struggle for months and sometimes years to find something...
Seems like you either need to change your career or start a business or something.
Thoughts?
Population collapse can have negative effects in the economy.
The more the aging population grows the less stable the country becomes.
