Fixing Berry Bushes: Genetics and timelines.

So I've gotten used to the new Berry Mechanics. I don't like everything about them, but I do appreciate what they were going for.

Unfortunately they screwed up big time on two major things.

  1. Berries now expire on the bush, and they expire *fast.*

  2. The genetics/traits update is pretty half baked.

So here's what I'd do to fix them.

First off, the loss issue. The window between "ripe" and "gone" is extremely short to the point that if you're on a server, good luck getting berries.

So to fix that, I propose that farmed, healthy Berry Bushes (i.e. not "struggling") will never lose their berries unless the temperature drops too low. That way you're not at the mercy of your server mates not being online and making you miss the very slim ripe windows.

Wild or Berry bushes that are otherwise struggling will lose their berries after a set time, though, so harvesting wild berries or leaving your farms in a bad state will not be as consistent.

Also the "Thin/thick skinned" trait will now be "berries ripen 25% slower/faster."

Second, the trait system as a whole.

The trait system is pretty neat but I feel like it's simply incomplete. You're just at the mercy of finding a decent bush rather than having any real way to influence them.

So to fix that;

  1. Every time you harvest a Berry trimming, there is a 2% chance that it will gain a negative trait or lose a positive trait, but a 10% chance to lose a negative trait or gain a random positive trait.

  2. If a Berry bush is within 1 tile of another Berry bush with a positive trait that Berry bush currently doesn't, there is an additional 10% chance to the trimming gains that specific trait. Additionally, if a bush with a negative trait is next to a bush *without* that negative trait, there is an additional 10% chance of *losing* that negative trait.

There will never be any more than a 2% chance of *gaining* a negative trait, meaning with enough time and good bush management it should be possible to get a perfect Berry bush.

Oh and maybe tack on like, a higher % chance of getting positive traits if the soil is really good or something.

Rainforest soil is devoid of nutrients. Indigenous Amazonians created fertile "terra preta" to grow dense crops.

I don't mind the new berry bushes except for one major issue: Farming berries is basically POINTLESS on a server. Played planted berry bushes should not lose their fruits because players can't be on servers 24/7.

The window for harvesting berries is MINISCULE.

I logged off when my berries were almost ripe, and by the time I was back *3 hours* later, I almost missed ALL of them. I barely got one blueberry harvest by .2 hours!

There's currently no point in trying to cultivate berries in a server setting because if being away for *three hours* can ruin an entire harvest, what chance do I have if people are online while I'm asleep? If they don't want berry bushes to be as powerful/easy to transport in the early game, that's fine. Let wild berries expire. But if I'm going to go through the effort of cultivating berry bushes, keeping their soil fertilized, the whole thing- My reward shouldn't be on an EXTREMELY strict timer!

For a game where the devs "Want to prioritize offense over defense" they sure make defense cards OP.

I'm not going to get on a soap box and claim that a game like Clash Royale is going to be easy to balance. There's so many cards, that can be paired with 7 other cards, facing off against a countless variation of other cards- Fine tuning to the point where any given card is perfectly balanced would be impossible.

But I can call ShittySell out on straight up lying about their design philosophy because holy shit do they LOVE defensive cards.

What's one of the most common defensive plays in CR?

Ice Spirit cannon skeletons. That can stop basically *anything* for 5 elixir.

Every single one of them got an Evo, and NONE of them are "offensive" cards. You could *maybe* claim Ice Spirit is offense and defense but skeletons and cannon? No.

One of the best defensive cards in the game, MK? Given an absurdly obnoxious evo that makes it even MORE powerful in defense.

Bowler shuts down entire lanes, can't reasonably be killed on the opponents side... AND IS NOW A MORTAR.

Games just DRAG AND DRAG because it doesn't matter what you do when your opponent can shut down entire pushes from their side with 5 elixir.
