Once we made a promise

It was June, the summer burned bright

On Bua's request, I took my flight

To Delhi I came, to an empty space

A house so silent, a forgotten place

No neighbors whispered, no footsteps fell

Just empty rooms and walls that tell

At first, alone, just me and the night

Yet something felt off, not quite right

Then Monday morning, soft and slow

Through the garden, I saw her go

A fleeting shadow, a stolen glance

A girl in white, lost in a trance

She plucked the roses, I called in surprise

She turned, then vanished before my eyes

A goofy dress, a face so fair

Yet something felt familiar there

I called my Bua, but she let it ring

Lost in a function, a busy thing

Days slipped by, yet once again

She came at dusk, just like then

This time, dandelions in her grasp

I caught her hand, I dared to ask

Why are you plucking these flowers you dumb

She only smiled, her lips went numb

Two flowers plucked, she placed in mine

And walked away like a fleeting time

That smile—it lingered, soft and true

As if I once before, somehow, knew

Curiosity bloomed like flowers in May

So I searched for her, day by day

And when at last we stood face to face

She spoke of temples, faith, and grace

She lived beyond the left bank's bend

She came for flowers, now and then

Yet something in her voice so mild

Echoed memories of me—a child

I should have asked, Do you know me

But let it be, let it be

And Mondays turned to something new

Dandelions held, and skies so blue

She flirted, laughed, played her part

Yet wove herself into my heart

Her presence light, a fleeting spark

A mystery wrapped within the dark

Then came the day I had to go

One last Monday, dandelions in tow

But she—she never came that night

Just silence there in pale moonlight

Months went by, no trace, no sign

Yet in my heart, she stayed enshrined

Then Bua came, a casual meet

As evening fell on Delhi’s streets

I told her of the girl I met

Her dandelions, her laughter set

Bua froze, a hush so deep

A story lost, a past asleep

Yash, she said, don’t you recall

We came here once, when you were small

A friend I had, her daughter bright

Your childhood mate, your joy, your light

She had no father, only her mother

Yet they had each, they had no other

Through struggle, strife, they found a way

To live, to laugh, to dream, to stay

But riots came, the city bled

Flames and screams, the streets ran red

And in that chaos, dark and wild

They took the mother, they took the child

Too shamed to live, too scarred to fight

They left this world one brutal night

A silence fell—a story untold

A sorrow whispered, soft yet cold

And then it struck, a chilling truth

A ghost had smiled beneath the moon

For Mondays past, I stood once more

Dandelions clutched at memory’s door

I saw her then, so young, so free

But how could she have looked at me

And then it hit—a distant year

A boy of seven, filled with cheer

He plucked a flower, gave her one

And she had sworn beneath the sun

One day, my friend, you'll come again

And I will wait—beyond the rain

After the Fair, We Learned to Pretend

It was a Christmas fair that forgot

it was supposed to be temporary.

Four years collapsed into one evening

of chowmein steam,

trampoline laughter,

teachers pretending not to judge,

and kids dancing like gravity had called in sick.

Candy floss stuck to fingers,

thumak thumak beats in the air,

nostalgia doing what it does best

lying gently.

And there you were.

Same face.

Same distance.

Same silence sharpened into hate

or maybe just practiced indifference.

Hard to tell now.

You spoke to everyone I knew.

Jokes landed. Smiles traveled.

Then you reached me

and suddenly we were actors

cast as strangers

who forgot their lines.

No fight.

No drama.

Just two people agreeing, without speaking,

to erase a shared past

in public.

And the stupid part?

I didn’t want closure.

Didn’t want apologies,

or explanations,

or the exhausting archaeology of “what went wrong.”

I just wanted to ask something small,

almost boring:

If life keeps throwing us

into the same rooms,

the same fairs,

the same future reunions

are we really going to keep rehearsing this silence

forever?

Can’t we downgrade the damage

into something ordinary?

A nod.

A neutral hello.

The decency strangers give each other

without history.

I thought about saying sorry too,

not because it would fix anything

but because unsent apologies

have weight.

They sit in the chest like unclaimed luggage.

But even now,

I’m telling this to you,

not to her.

Routing my honesty through witnesses

like always.

Maybe Jijji was right.

Maybe I freeze when moments matter.

Maybe I’m brave only in retrospect.

I didn’t speak.

Because what if she frowned again?

What if my words reopened a wound

she already stitched shut?

What if my courage became her inconvenience?

So I smiled at the fair,

ate the chowmein,

laughed on cue,

danced like nothing inside me was unresolved.

Overthinking?

Sure.

But silence thinks too

it just does it louder.

And maybe this is how it ends.

Not with forgiveness or fire,

but with two people

standing ten feet apart

in a crowded place,

pretending they never learned

each other’s names.
