Update on DAAD Helmut-Schmidt Application

Hi!

I have applied for the DHS Scholarship this year and my choices were MPP at Erfurt and M.A in Governance & Public Policy at University of Passau.

Let me just say that the applications had a stark difference. Erfurt was easier to apply to and Passau was almost asking me to obtain a DNA sample from my ancestors.

Anyway, I’m really nervous about the outcome. I normally don’t apply for scholarships given the fact that I work round the clock but I had put so much effort into this application. If there’s anyone else who’s applied, I’m genuinely sending them my best wishes.

Somali youth, I genuinely think this is a conversation worth joining

I’m involved with a young, Somali-founded and youth-led nonprofit that has been working on an idea I genuinely think is worth putting in front of more Somalis.

For decades, so much of the conversation about Somalia’s development has happened through international organizations, projects and institutions. Billions have been raised and spent in the name of Somalia, but one question still matters: how much space do ordinary Somalis, especially young Somalis, actually have to shape what development, civic participation and change should look like?

There has to be room for development that is locally owned. For Somalis to organize, exchange ideas, challenge things that are not working and build institutions and solutions of our own.

That is part of the thinking behind Civic Somalia, a new digital and inclusive civic space being developed by young Somalis, for young Somalis.

They’re holding the first CivicLab on August 20, and the idea is actually very simple: come and talk.

What is missing from civic spaces in Somalia? What stops young people from participating? What have you personally experienced? What would you change? What kind of space would you actually participate in?

You don’t need to work in development. You don’t need to be an activist, lawyer or expert. Even one experience, one observation or one idea is worth bringing into the room.

And you don’t have to be physically in Somalia. If you’re Somali and care about where the country is going, your perspective matters too.

I genuinely want to see more young Somalis in this conversation.

If you know another Somali who would have something to say, send it to them too.
