Suggestion: A video on Richard Stallman, the Free Software Foundation, and the history of GNU/Linux

Hey everyone,

With all the Linux content LTT has been producing over the last few years, I think there is a massive piece of tech history that would make for a fantastic deep dive or Techquickie.

We all know about Linus Torvalds and the kernel, but it would be awesome to see a video dedicated to Richard Stallman and the Free Software Foundation. As we watch companies like Microsoft shift their focus to enterprise cloud services, it's highly ironic that their massive Azure infrastructure is fundamentally running on Linux. But none of that would exist without the GNU tools and the GPL license that the FSF championed.

Stallman is definitely an eccentric (and sometimes controversial) figure, but the philosophy of "free as in freedom" shaped the entire enterprise and homelab tech landscape we rely on today.

A video exploring the difference between open-source and free software, and the history of how GNU/Linux actually came together, would be a great history lesson for the audience.

Would you guys watch a history-focused video on this? Would love to see the LTT writing team tackle it.

Update: I had no idea about all these controversies. An LTT video strictly about the history of the Free Software Foundation and the GPL would still be super valuable.

Settled on the GT6 + titanium strap

I had a hard time deciding whether to get the GT5/GT6 or the Pro model.

Luckily, I found a great deal and settled on the GT6 (brown) for €170. I just couldn’t justify the extra price for the Pro. I was worried that the regular version would look unappealing because of the gap, but I went with brown because of the metallic finish and knew it would look best with a metallic strap.

I ended up purchasing a titanium strap and installing a screen protector on the GT6. It gives me almost the exact same protection as a Pro model, but for way less money.

Btw: The watch face I'm using is ALP99X (A.L.P.).

LAN control silently killed Govee T2 tv light

I have automations within my home that heavily relies on the fast and responsive LAN control features of my Govee lights.

I’ve discovered that LAN control option is missing for the device and I’m assuming this happened after an OTA update.

I’ve tried controlling the lights over ble using an esp32 and a custom component but this no where near stable…

Can I somehow downgrade the firmware of the t2 light or could Govee support perhaps push a version with LAN control enabled? I’ve tried using the standard aws (cloud) control, but this is nowhere near as responsive as LAN control.

How are you locally controlling your lights?

Built an Auto-Pause system using mmWave Radar to keep my toddler from standing too close to the TV

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a fun project I recently finished. Like many of you with toddlers, my daughter has developed a fascination with standing about two inches away from the TV screen. To protect her eyes and teach her to keep her distance, I decided to automate the parenting.

Whenever she gets too close (< 240cm), the TV automatically pauses. Once she steps back, it resumes. She actually adapted to it immediately and now stays behind the "invisible line" on her own!

Hardware

  • Sensor: Hi-Link HLK-LD2410C (24GHz mmWave Radar)
  • Board: M5Stack Atom Lite (ESP32)
  • Mounted directly under the TV edge (I initially hid it inside my wooden TV cabinet, but the wood density messed with the radar scattering).

The Netflix Hurdle: Everything works perfectly for apps like SmartTube and my local TV provider app, but the official Netflix app actively blocks state updates (playing/paused) via the Android TV integration. I had to build a bypass in Node-RED to ignore Netflix so the flow doesn't get stuck.

Demo & Code:

Has anyone else found a reliable workaround for reading the play/pause state of the Netflix app on Android TV?

Planning a massive 4-Zone Hyperion + WLED Setup! Looking for advice on my parts list and the final effect.

Hey r/WLED!

I'm planning to upgrade my living room setup from a Govee T2 to a full custom Hyperion + WLED ecosystem. I've attached pictures of how my living room currently looks, along with a concept photo of what I'm aiming for.

The Plan

I want to create a highly immersive, 4-zone setup:

  1. TV Ambilight: Direct 'naked' strips on the back of the TV for fast, accurate syncing.
  2. Slat Wall Halo: V-profile diffusers on the left and right sides of my wooden slat wall, washing the wall behind it.
  3. TV Cabinet: U-profile backwash in front of the cabinet on the floor to anchor the setup.
  4. The Sofa: A synced under-glow beneath my L-shaped sofa using a secondary, wireless WLED controller.

The Hardware

I've attached screenshots of my current shopping basket. The core components I'm planning to use are:

  • LEDs: 12V SK6812 RGBW strips (Black PCB).
  • Power: Mean Well LRS-200-12 PSU (for the TV area) + a separate enclosed 12V adapter for the sofa.
  • Controllers: 2x Gledopto ESP32 WLED Controllers (one handling the TV/Wall/Cabinet, one for the sofa).
  • Syncing: Rezcoo 4K HDMI Splitter (with scaler) + USB Capture Card going into a Thin Client running Hyperion.
  • Wiring: 18 AWG 3-pin extension wires, WAGO 221 connectors, and 3-pin solderless corner connectors.

My Questions

Before I pull the trigger and order everything, I’d love to get your input:

  1. The Parts List: Does my shopping basket look solid? Will everything work together, or am I missing any crucial components/making any obvious rookie mistakes?
  2. Hyperion vs. SignalRGB: For those who have experience with both, how does the responsiveness and color accuracy of Hyperion compare to something like SignalRGB? Will the result be just as fluid? Like this https://youtu.be/kJC-BvfhafY?t=1743
  3. The "Overwhelming" Factor: With 4 active zones, I'm a bit worried it might turn into a distracting disco. Can Hyperion manage the surrounding ambient zones (wall, cabinet, sofa) subtly enough so that the colors are immersive and nice, rather than overwhelming and distracting from the TV?
  4. General Advice: Any tips, tricks, or thoughts on this specific layout before I start building?

Thanks in advance for your help!
