Looking for Roommate - $1250

My roommate moved out unexpectedly, so I have a room opening up in a private house and need it filled by end of month. Looking for someone reliable for a 1-year lease.

Rent is $1,250/month, plus $35 for internet and about $100 for Con Ed. The house has a washer/dryer in unit, a Japanese-style bathroom with a bidet toilet, and great natural lighting throughout. It’s about a 3 minute walk to transportation. Quiet Neighborhood.

To apply: $20 application fee, plus deposit and first month’s rent due at signing.

Looking for:
Ideally a male/female college/Post Graduate student in their 20s with an active lifestyle — someone tidy, respectful of shared space, and easy to live with.

If you’re interested, message me and I can answer questions or set up a time to see the place.

This is a lot, How do I go about this?

This is the question that I’m asking. Prior to saying this I do take responsibility for not checking these people a little bit more before moving in but I was excited and it’s my first time having roommates, living alone from my parents.

I have two Roommates let’s refer to them as X and Y. Lease started last year around October for a 3br/1ba— brand new construction, newly added Washer/Dryer, fucking Japanese style bathroom with a bidet on the toilet. You can tell by my explanation that I was euphoric. Everything started very well, moved in same night as I signed the lease for that first week I was alone, no one else moved in yet. I also moved in with my cat. Roommate X moved in with a dog. Now the lease said no dogs and the stipulation for her moving in with the dog is that she brings it back to her family home because she’s not from this state she’s from across the country, she agreed to it in a text with the Landlord and Me. First month went well, went out of my way to really create an environment of comfort and leisure while maintaining boundaries —I’m a Black male living with two random women I needed to maintain boundaries. To be candid I also didn’t have any friends, I wanted to make some —starting my first full semester in college and in a new location I wanted to explore and meet new people. So we all went out for Halloween enjoyed our self things came from it, it was cool. During this time I’d say the first 2 months, expectations of managing the crib wasn’t set. We did have an understanding with relation to how we dealt with interactions such as letting people know when they’d have guests over but that was pretty much it. Roommate X and Y brung a few supplies from their past place or brought new things. I didn’t buy anything because I started my job a month before I moved in so I used all of my money on a deposit and first month’s rent as well as just food in general. Didn’t have cooking supplies and the Cooking Utensils that X and Y brung was not enough for me to cook what I usually cook. Eventually January my first clear check I brought a bunch of things for the house this included a swifter, Garbage bags— we didn’t have a trash can yet, Few bottles of Meyers, Bathroom Mats, a few Scrub Mommies, Bathroom Cleaner and an entire Kitchen Set. i also noticed that for Thanksgiving Roommate X took her dog back so I was pretty happy but sometime in January after the New Year I noticed I started seeing less of her. In the middle of the month I hear scratching noise through my door in the morning as someone and then a bunch of bag movement. I initially think she snuck the dog back but It’s just a guess I’m behind closed doors I can’t see her. Time goes on and one day I’m standing outside our building complex and I see her walking with a heavy bag and I swear I see a dog in the bag. The next weekend I see a woman from afar walking a dog that looks damn near replica of hers but it’s a shitzu so they all look alike. Then as I’m walking to the supermarket I walk past her she has her head down and is walking past me fast with her dog on a leash. It’s then following I ask roommate Y “hey did she tell you she was bringing her dog back?” She said “No she just kind of just did it, why did you not want her to do it?”. I said “No she literally snuck the dog back” then I went into my room.

A few later I get a text from roommate Y asking me to keep my cat in my room when I go out to work more because he’s getting in the garbage and jumping on the platform in the kitchen(no pets on counter) I said that’s not a problem I’ll keep him in for a little, he shouldn’t be doing that I’ll put him on timeout. I also notice around this time that when i get home my cat is outside the room, and when I ask i’m told that he got out himself. To give background I’ve had my cat since I was in 7th grade, I’m 24. He has never once opened a door, he’s a clawwer, he claws a door open before he jumps —he’s too fat and he’s done it to every door in my old house when my family wouldn’t let him in. I didn’t believe it at all, he’s never jumped for the handle when I’m in the room, when I keep the door closed and make food outside the room he’s never once jumped. I eventually get a fingerprint lock from amazon a few days later but we move past that.

To keep back to the timeline When I got stuff for the house I also got food that’s when I started noticing certain things. Spices were overflowing in the cabinets and there was virtually no space the same was said for the refrigerator. I squeeze my stuff in but at the same time I also had storage bins from when I was moving that was perfect for the kitchen so I thought why not put some spices in that storage bin and put it on top of the fridge. Now I will acknowledge that touching another persons item without asking them is taboo but I had no space. Eventually when they get in and they check the cabinets they immediately send a text “ please return it back to how it is” (i’ll post screenshots) It eventually leads into a whole argument that leads to us setting a date for a meeting. and at the same time Im keeping my door open for my cat so he can roam and they print accept that. I ask them not to bring the cat thing up because at this point It’s unfair to talk about my cat when roommate X snuck a dog in and you were perfectly fine. The lease also explicitly states No dogs.

We have the meeting and I only had it focused on cleaning, adding doorknobs to the cabinets and evening out the cabinet space maybe getting a lazy Susan. We also needed a garbage can, a shoe stand, and a doormat. Unsurprisingly they weren’t engaged in the convo about the house they only cared about the cat. In which they both jumped on me and she switched it on me and asked if you knew about the dog why didn’t you bring it up to me. It caught me off guard and had me astonished given that she had to fly on a plane back here with a dog. Eventually argument got way out of hand and I went into my room.

Since then the bathroom hasn’t been cleaned besides when I go out my way but I stopped after I noticed Roommate X has never cleaned the house and Roommate Y is on her own time, I stopped cooking in June when I got my bonus and have been eating out exclusively every night. I just started cooking again 2 weeks ago. we had a gnat infestation and out of spite Monday, Roommate Y threw out my $80 garbage that i brought for the house because I stopped throwing out the garbage even though none of that it is my garbage and I’m annoyed that I had to pay for the garbage can and black garbage bags since January, no one has brought garbage bags since, I’ve spent over 200 dollars since on garbage bags + garbage can. They both stopped paying internet last month so I’ve changed the password and kicked them off the wifi. The lease is coming to a close and Roommate X isn’t allowing me access to the room for viewings. Roommate Y has threatened me and is constantly taking showers when I take my morning showers and it effect my routine making me late. I know she does it on purpose because it’s on a day that she doesn’t work. So she’d go in the bathroom at my time, take a shower while watching a show or singing then just go back into her room. Roommate Y keeps bringing people over and doesn’t let me know so I keep walking out my room to randoms in my living room. I’m extremely exhausted but I love this house. I went to the landlord but she can’t necessarily do anything about it unless I get the police involved and i’m on edge that she may just be tired of the complaints in bringing her and clean house as she’s a private landlord. I believe they both have blocked me and are just doing what they want. How do I go about this.
