I’ll be moving to the US in the near future, so this question is more about the current state of charging infrastructure in the US - I understand it’s probably better in Europe.

I’m really interested in buying a used EV as my first car, but I’m concerned that it might not be the most economical option if I can’t charge at home. Of course I don’t yet know exactly where I’ll live, but I know it will probably be an apartment for at least the first few years.

Do apartments often have chargers available? Do they have enough for the demand? If my apartment doesn’t have chargers, I’ll have to use public chargers - how does the cost of these generally compare to gas? I can accept needing to wait a bit for the battery to charge (and they are getting faster), but not if it turns out to be more expensive than driving a hybrid, with all else the same.

So I’m a 21M university student and I make about R2500pm tutoring (looking to expand) and R2500pm from other income. I have no expenses besides buying food when I’m out, monthly data plan and occasionally clothes, but unfortunately my spending habits are not ideal and I don’t save much - that said, I can probably change that if I tried.

I’m a big fan of cars and driving in general and would like to buy something relatively quick and cheap - something sportier and more pleasant to drive than my mom’s 2017 Picanto. I’m particularly interested in something like a 2000s MX-5, 2010s Ford Fiesta ST, Suzuki Swift sport or older model Polo GTI with a budget of around R175-200k. Obviously I don’t have this sort of cash on hand, but I was wondering (perhaps naively) if I could finance something like this at a budget of, say, R3000pm.

Am I delusional for considering financing a car with this income, like should I just stick with the Picanto till I can get a full-time job, or could this actually work out?
