Tech work—> EMT —> Welder
Hi everyone! Longtime reader, first time poster.
I’m 36 and I worked in tech for a few years! Thought it was going to be my forever (even though it was boring as HELL), and then I got laid off. I had to pick myself up and get a new skill quickly so I became an EMT. I live by myself so being an EMT was more of a “I NEED a job” lol and I knew I would get hired quickly. I actually love it but I don’t see myself working for the city so to finally get that stability I’ve been craving I just signed up for welding school!
I am beyond excited. I’m of course worried about starting pay but I do have savings I can nibble off of while I gain more experience.
I currently am an EMT for a construction site so all I do is watch people in all the trades work and build things. It’s been a great way to see what I like / interested in.
My question is: What kinds of things should I be learning before school starts in August. I won’t be able to take their blueprint reading class because it’s in the morning and I work, but I would like to sign up for one online.
I searched so freakin hard but I didn’t find a union that was specific to welding in Baltimore. I’m also wondering if any of yall did one trade (like welding) and then joined an apprenticeship program later? I’m not necessarily in a rush but I’m the kind of person that when I see something I want I just need to start it.
