Long term foreign residents

I just moved to Okinawa. I married a Japanese woman 25 years ago and lived in Japan at that time for 2 years. Towards the end of my first time in Japan I ended up feeling resentful of society because people wanted to know me because I spoke English. As a result I felt lonely.

I am wondering how long term residents stay here and remain content. I think Japanese culture is interesting and the food is great. What do long term residents do to remain sane?

Buying a house

My wife and I are researching buying a home. We found old house (28years) which is in a great quiet neighborhood. We have contacted a contractor to make adjustments and solve certain problems. For example the exterior needs to be repainted. There are no cracks or spalling. For those long term residents who bought homes. How have old homes aged in this harsh climate? Do you think buying an old home is foolish? I appreciate any honest feedback.

Post typhoon activities

I have seen lots of Japanese washing the exterior walls of their homes and taking cars for car wash. I think they do this to prevent corrosion. Do you think this is a good practice?

In the Midwest salt on the roads would destroy car exterior. I’m curious

Cell phones

I have moved to Okinawa. We got new iPhones due to the internet network here. This was frustrating. We now have 4 iPhones (model 15) that we are not going to use. Do people buy American iPhones in Okinawa?

Johnny Cash and his power

I have been having a tough time as my family is in Japan and I’m working in Seattle. I miss my family something fierce. I think Mr. Cash as an American treasure and a spokesman for the working class. His words encourage me.

What artist in your mind speak to working class people?

Giving stuff away

I am in the midst of a major life reboot. I sold my house and got rid of 90% of what I own and am moving to Okinawa. It feels so good to have less. Really quite extraordinary. I recommend doing this

If prices continue to rise

I think people will cut back on discretionary spending. People will eat out less. Bring their lunch to work. Take the bus. This does not help the economy. Now if we had a giant earthquake that would help the economy.

What spending have you cut back on with prices being as they are?

The Rezillos

This is a really cool Scottish punk band. I really like the female singer. I think punk music is witty and clever in ways the other genres are not. Punk has this energy or pace that drives the music. I really like the song “Glad all over.”

I am a subscriber to Apple Music and I like it

I am aware that I tend to return to music I know pretty well. I tend to stay in classic rock and music from the 90’s

I have been listening to the playlists that Apple generates from my listening history. I think they are good because it pushes me out of my narrow band of music.

Apple Music subscribers do you like those playlists?

I was listening to ones labeled Country music from the 70’s. And Country music from the 60’s. Those were great playlists.
