Fingering Epiphanies

Have other people had the experience of trying to play something off a tab, finding it extremely difficult and dropping it for a while and then coming back and suddenly thinking, “What if I fingered it THIS way” and then it’s obviously easy? I don’t know if my subconscious is helping me out or just delights in making me feel stupid.

First Impressions Martin Kovar Strings

Restrung the Martin OM28V with Kovar extra lights. Not to bury the lede, these are great strings and well worth the money. The sustain is amazing as is the low end - and these are extra lights, my friend. Makes me wonder about the other gauges. This could get expensive :-) First thing I noticed when restringing is that the tension is noticeably lower on the wound strings - I'm thinking that CAN'T be the tension to get that low E in tune - but it was. Similarly with the other wound strings. Whatever they're doing with their SP core does, in fact, make for easier bends. Besides the excellent tone, you also get more volume - I am not kidding, more volume. All in all, I now have to order up a set for the SC10E. Probably go with the lights there just to see what happens.

Martin Kovar - Any Issues With Nickel Allergies?

Hi, folks. I can’t wear watch bands with nickel in the buckle, but I’m thinking that with calluses and the intermittent contact it wouldn’t be an issue with these strings. Anybody out there with this allergy tried them? I realize the wrap is only 29% nickel but I doubt the watch band clasp was pure nickel. Any thoughts on how they sound are appreciated as well.

I’ve seen some recent mention of the ToneBar, a free standing metal bar inside the sound hole. Thread the ball ends on the bar, feed the strings through from underneath, tune up and there you go. I’ve also seen replacement pins of brass and other materials. Have any of you tried any of these and, if so, what did you think?

ToneBar description here. Listing is out of date but descriptions are still useful. https://reverb.com/item/66137256-tonebar-patent-11798519-string-mounting-sys-method
