Orcas, Dolphins and Humpback Whales today.
6 days of Orcas here in the bay. Reports that all of the CA51As and Jimmy are in the Bay today!
After seeing orcas in the morning we came by some humpbacks who decided do some people watching
This is Jimmy CA50B and his Grand Niece CA51A2 Andi and Andi’s Calf Astrid.
Lots of orcas the past few days, get out on a boat if you want to see these awesome animals how they should be seen. In the wild hunting and working in the ecosystem.
Long beaked common dolphins showed up today and with clear water they were amazing to see.
Epic day out on the Monterey Bay today. Two different humpback calfs decided to jump over and over. Two other sub adults decided to check out our boat (we were stopped) really close. Then baby and mom started breaching. September is one of the most active humpback seasons so JUMP on a boat and get out there!
A pod of at least three hunting sea lions
Always cool to see a multi ton animal throw itself out of the ocean.

On Sunday, August 30, the series will feature a special celebration with the Monterey Bay Fisheries Trust and Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, in collaboration with Woodward Marine Market. Guests 18 and older will have the opportunity to enjoy a free uni tasting while learning more about the region’s marine ecosystems, sustainable fisheries, and local research.
Seas the Summer will take place along the Moss Landing waterfront in front of Woodward Marine Market, located at 10932 Clam Way, Moss Landing, CA 95039.

Hi Folks,
I'm Luke Kilpatrick, you may have seen some of my recent posts about orcas and other events out in the ocean. When I am not telling folks about the awesomeness that is our bay, I am working to make where we live and love better.
I am running for Sand City Council. This is a small office that has a large influence across the county as many county board seats are held by elected officials, and it doesn't matter the size of the city they represent. The votes they make on those boards can impact your day to day. While you may not live in Sand City (or if you are one of the lucky ~325 that do) there is a good chance you shop, drive through or go to the beach here.
I know opinions on Reddit can be diverse, and I will not promise I will adopt every position, but I want to have the discussion. (Yes, we all know Bubba Gump's needs a second location in the old Office Depot next to Costco.)
My full platform is at https://kilpatrick4sandcity.org and I'm happy to get into any of it. But what I actually want to know is what you think Sand City could do better.
Things a Sand City council person can actually move: zoning and land use inside city limits, the vacant coastal parcels, finishing the coastal trail, short term rental rules, business permitting, how the arts and murals get supported, and the budget.
Things that matter but aren't Sand City's to decide directly: the Marina desal plant is a regional fight, Highway 1 is Caltrans, water allocation runs through Cal Am and the Water Management District, and anything near the shoreline goes to the Coastal Commission.
That said, this is where the small city thing cuts the other way. Sand City councilmembers have historically held seats on the regional bodies that do decide those things. A council seat here is a seat at those tables.
I want to hear what you want, because I know it's a lot easier to post on a reddit thread than show up at a city council meeting, so let me help bring some of that voice to the chambers.
Today, was more incredible than yesterday, and yesterday was spectacular. Here is some of the footage from today's hunt about 5 miles off of Carmel Beach.
The hunt started off in a pod of 1500 Common Dolphins, but they left the area in a big hurry leaving only 2 dolphins for the Orcas to target.
We have seen the CA140B's and CA50B the past two days, we never know when we might see them again.
I know I posted already today, but I figured folks might want to see this sequence. Disclosure: I work for Sanctuary Cruises Whale Watching, but this was some of the most amazing Orca behavior I have ever witnessed. Female orca's blasting dolphins out of the water to stun and consume them was incredible to see and it happened on 3 sides of the boat for about 5 minutes. Probably the most intense 5 minutes I have had on the bay so far! Hope you like the video.
If you can get on a whale watching boat today might be your day. Moss Landing boats are probably best. It’s rare we get them in July, so if you want to see a Killer Whale in the wild how they are ment to be seen, today might be a good day for it.
