I lack technique and need to learn the fundamentals, how to relearn how to draw?
I know this might come across as me fishing for compliments or being self-deprecating, but that's really not what I'm trying to do.
I'm self-taught and never really studied. I just did my thing for long enough until I was happy with my art. I don't know how to paint. I just throw random colors together until I accidentally find some combination that I like. I don't know how to sketch. I generally just draw and hope for the best, and bang, it's finished, usually all on the same layer. And don't ask me about advanced techniques like hatching or perspective (and it's pretty evident that I never learned about line weight).
A lot of people have told me that my drawings are great, and I do appreciate that, but I feel like the reality is that I have very little actual technical knowledge. I've just gotten good at hiding my weaknesses and leaning into the things that happen to work, to the point where the strengths tend to stand out more than the flaws.
But for financial reasons, I plan to work with commissions as a second source of income, and I need to become a better artist. But my fundamentals are rotten because I never really learned them. The point is: I lack technique. How should I go about fixing that, since I would basically have to relearn how to draw the "right" way after years of bad habits?
