Research cruise

Hi everybody!

I'm a first-year PhD student working in Arctic micropaleontology, and I've been working with foraminifera since 2019. One thing I'd really like to do during my PhD is join a research cruise.

I was wondering if there's some kind of database where research cruises are listed, or where you can see which research vessels have received funding or have upcoming expeditions. How do people usually find opportunities to join a cruise? Is there an application process, or is it mostly through collaborations and networking?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I did try asking my supervisor, but unfortunately he isn't very responsive, so I thought I'd ask here instead.

Thanks in advance! :)

ASUS ZenBook+portable screen or ZenBook duo

Hi everybody,

ZenBook Duo vs ZenBook + Portable Monitor

Hi everyone,

This might be a bit of a longer post, but I'd really appreciate your advice.

I'm a scientist and spend a lot of time working with large datasets. My typical workflow includes RStudio (programming and data analysis), Inkscape, MS Office, Canva, and a lot of multitasking between applications.

I've been wanting to replace my current laptop for a while now because it's getting pretty old and struggling to keep up. Someone recommended the ASUS ZenBook series, and while researching, the ZenBook Duo really caught my attention.

Since I travel frequently and often work entirely from my laptop, the built-in dual-screen setup seems incredibly appealing. However, because it's still relatively new technology and quite expensive (I've been looking at both the 2025 and 2026 versions), I'm wondering whether it would make more sense to buy a regular ZenBook and pair it with a portable external monitor instead.

For those of you who travel and work remotely:

  • Have you used the ZenBook Duo?
  • How practical is the second screen in everyday use?
  • Any reliability or durability concerns?
  • Is the Duo worth the extra cost compared to a standard ZenBook + portable monitor setup?
  • What laptop/portable monitor combinations are you currently using?

I've also been looking at a few ZenBook models, so if you own one, I'd love to hear your experience and whether you'd buy it again.

Thanks in advance! 😄
