Paramedics vs Doctors: The Knowledge Gap?

Paramedics vs Doctors: The Knowledge Gap?

I currently work in an ambulance training role, and one thing I’ve noticed repeatedly is how often the difference in the depth and breadth of knowledge between paramedics and doctors is underestimated.

I’ve seen this across all levels of experience, from first-year paramedics to those with 10+ years in the role. There can be a perception that an experienced paramedic’s clinical knowledge is approaching that of a junior doctor, without fully appreciating the scale and depth of medical training.

It often seems that only when paramedics move into HEMS and work closely alongside physicians is the true extent of the knowledge gap fully appreciated.

I’d be interested in people’s views on this graph. Does it accurately represent the relative depth and breadth of knowledge across these roles?

First Aid

Hi 👋🏻. Does anybody who is currently employed by a UK FRS have any First Aid / Medical questions regarding topics that they don't understand?

Also, any advice on what makes a good first aid trainer vs a bad one in your experience?

Muchos Gracias x

ABD / Acute Behavioural Disturbance

Hi 👋🏻

I work for an NHS Ambulance Trust and have a specialist interest in overdose management, particularly poisoning and toxidromes.

After managing several overdoses during my last block of shifts, it's become apparent to me that there may be a gap between what police officers currently understand and what clinicians would like them to know (minus early recognition/escalation)

From your perspective:

- What do you currently understand about ABD?

- What do you think medics want you to modify in your approach

I'm genuinely interested in hearing your perspective, as it'll help identify where education and training could be improved.

FYI, I am aware ABD is an umbrella policing term and not a medical diagnosis; therefore, depending on your Force, you may have non-overdose related medical conditions that you define as ABD.
