Incoming MSc student looking for research opportunities in PMICs / DC-DC converters / energy harvesting

Hi everyone

I’ll be starting my Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering at the University of Genoa (UniGe) in Italy soon, and I’m trying to plan ahead for my master’s thesis and, potentially, future research.

My main interests are:

  • Power Management ICs (PMICs)
  • DC-DC converters, mostly switched-capacitor, buck/boost/buck-boost, and resonant converters
  • Energy harvesting and low-power power conversion
  • Analog/mixed-signal IC design related to power management

At first I was mainly looking at professors and research groups within UniGe, but I realized that it might make more sense to look more broadly and not just inside the university I’ll be attending since I haven't been able to identify a professor or research group within UniGe working specifically on PMICs. So I’m hoping to get some advice on research groups, professors, or labs that might be open to working with a master’s student from another university.

A bit about my background:

I recently graduated in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. During my undergraduate studies, I was part of an IC design lab and gained some experience with Cadence Virtuoso and the TSMC 180 nm process.

I’ve also studied DC-DC converters independently, including switched-capacitor, buck, boost, and buck-boost converters. On the analog side, I have a foundational background in topics such as:

  • single-stage amplifiers
  • current mirrors
  • frequency response
  • basic stability analysis

Most of my background comes from Razavi and Allen & Holberg. I haven’t gone very deeply into topics such as bandgap references, LDOs, or advanced op-amp design yet.

I only have one Q2 journal publication from my undergraduate research on a hybrid resonant switched-capacitor DC-DC converter: https://etasr.com/index.php/ETASR/article/view/10817

The work was entirely simulation-based in Cadence Virtuoso using TSMC 180 nm. Unfortunately, I didn’t have access to the funding/facilities needed for a tape-out, so I haven’t had the opportunity to go through the full ASIC flow from design to tape-out.

Because of that, I’m particularly interested in finding a research environment where I could take the next step and gain more experience with actual IC implementation, or more advanced power-management research.

I’m wondering whether it is possible to do something along the lines of:

UniGe MSc → formal thesis supervisor at UniGe → research/project carried out with an external professor, research group, university, or institute elsewhere in Italy, Europe, the US, or Canada → thesis ultimately submitted through UniGe.

Of course, I understand that this would depend on UniGe’s rules and potentially on agreements between the institutions. I’m mainly trying to find out whether people have actually done something along these lines, what form the arrangement took, and how feasible it is.

So I’d especially appreciate recommendations for:

  1. Research groups/labs anywhere in Italy, Europe, the US, or Canada working on PMICs, integrated DC-DC converters, switched-capacitor converters, energy harvesting, low-power ICs, or closely related topics.
  2. Professors/researchers who are receptive to MSc students from other universities.
  3. Experiences with doing an external/collaborative MSc thesis, where the student is officially enrolled at one university but performs the research with another group.
  4. Advice on how students normally arrange this kind of collaboration and how early I should start contacting professors.

I’m also very open to related areas such as analog IC design, low-power circuits, power electronics, mixed-signal ICs, and energy-efficient systems, even if the group doesn’t work specifically on PMICs.

I know I still have a lot to learn, but I’m serious about pursuing in this direction and would love to hear from anyone who has gone through a similar path.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations, experiences, or advice :D

Need help finding players with no battle tag

Just like what the title say, I owe Aternas69 and Nihmy69 3 wins, I WILL GET THEM 3 WINS

But they are offline, and my luck is shit so I doubt if I can ever get to them ever again to add them in-game.

Since I left the game before it was finished, the replay has been flagged as incomplete, uploading to heroesprofile didn't work, I tried casc and ladik mpq viewer to open the replay file, no idea wtf I was doing, I have no choice but to come up here and ask for help

Urgent: ALISEO Scholarship (UniGe) - Deadline July 31st. Missing docs + Form error

I’m enrolling in the Master’s in Electronic Engineering at the University of Genoa (Liguria) for the 2026/2027 academic year and I’m applying for the ALISEO regional scholarship.

I have two urgent questions before the July 31st deadline:

  1. Missing documents: I already submitted the application on the ALISEO portal and received the submission receipt. However, I haven't uploaded my required financial documents yet (ISEE/translated docs) because they aren't ready. There is a chance I won't have them all scanned by the deadline.

Does ALISEO allow supplementary document uploads after July 31st? If I'm late, who exactly do I email – is it the general ALISEO helpdesk or a specific university office (and which email address)? I'm not looking for a legal "appeal", just the standard procedure for late integrations.

  1. Form error (Accommodation): I made a huge mistake while filling out the form. I did NOT tick the box for "accommodation - new application" because I had already found a private room. I just realized that by not ticking it, the scholarship amount is significantly reduced.

Can I modify this section before the deadline by logging back in, or do I have to do something else to rectify this? If so, which email address handles these correction requests?

Any advice from past ALISEO applicants would be a lifesaver. Thanks!

residenza universitaria a Genova? (university residence in Genoa)

like the title said, have anyone stay in these dormitories or you know people that have stayed in places like that before?

I've got into the master's program for electronic engineering at University of Genoa and I'm looking for a place to rent. My previous supervisor told me to go and look up university dormitories in Genoa, I found a few of them on google search but I can't figure out how are the rooms over there, are they single rooms or do I have roommates, shared bathroom or not, but most importantly I have no idea how much do they cost

Pre-Enrollment on Universitaly Portal, when will the result be available?

Hi everyone, I would like to ask when will we get a result saying either we passed on Universitaly portal or not

I've applied into Master's Program for Electronic Engineering at University of Genoa, the coordinator of the MSc program emailed to me twice, 1st time was back in March to say that I've got accepted as the outcome of my admission, the 2nd time was yesterday to "confirm the approval of your application at the Electronic Engineering MSc programme of the University of Genova" and tell me to "please proceed with demanding the pre-immatriculation online". Now the problem is that when I go to University of Genoa (UniGe) online website to make my Pre-enrollment application like the email told me to, I've ran into error indicating that the result of my application on Universitaly portal is not available yet, given that Universitaly portal will close on 19th June and it is already 5th of June right now. If anything goes wrong, I don't think I have a good amount of time to fix it. Suffice to say I am quite nervous right now lol
