Flash Fiction Piece - Deception
I'm writing this for a flash fiction competition. It only has to be between 100-300 words. This is my first attempt at such a small piece of fiction writing so feedback is greatly appreciated.
Deception
I stood frozen. For a moment I thought it was you. She had your smile. One which revealed a tooth which grew atop the row of teeth normally had by one. A quality you both shared. Yet, in my heart, I know it be a deception of the mind. A fleeting moment. One where I am believed, just for a second, that you live again.
The moment passed, and your face faded away, revealing the face of a woman. Not as pretty, but definitely as kind. As you once were, sister. More kind than I. For you would not comment on whether she was pretty, but on her kindness instead. At times, as much as I hate to admit it, I am cruel. I could only dream to be as kind as you were. I would be once again deceiving myself to believe I could ever live up to you.
But I know you would laugh at the thought. You were as humble as you were kind. You never tried to do good. You just were. You were never one to bully or push around. Like the Beatles, you believed that “all you need is love”. You loved the Beatles. Most importantly, you were never one to deceive. With you, what you saw was what you got. And were we ever glad to have you as you were.
