Is 45 days enough for Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos?

I have a trip planned for the end of this year: China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand.

I fly to China first and that leg is already booked, with the plan to get the train/coach into Hanoi on 18th October. I am then meeting family in Chiang Mai on 1st December. That leaves 45 days in the middle to get around Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. I will explore the rest of Thailand after seeing family.

Will 45 days be enough to see all three countries, or would I be better breaking this up. E.g. doing Vietnam and Laos then flying back over to do Cambodia at the end? I am worried that I already have quite a long list of things I'd like to do in each country and I don't want to feel rushed with only having 2 weeks per country. For example, I've heard of people spending a month in just Vietnam.

I have saved a lot of money and am quitting my job to travel so I am somewhat flexible. I was planning to spend a total of 3-4 months travelling.

Is proof of onward travel needed?

I'm visiting China from the UK in September. I'm planning to spend around 3 weeks there and then get the coach from Nanning to Hanoi. I don't think it's possible to pre-book this coach before I arrive in Nanning, so I have no proof of onward travel. Will this be a problem if I can show my pre-booked hotel in Hanoi for when I arrive there?

Getting into Thailand from Cambodia without flying

Sorry if this has been asked before as I imagine it’s topical.

I’ll be travelling SEA in October-December of this year, taking a route from Vietnam>Cambodia>Thailand. I would rather not fly other than my initial flights there and back.

I’m travelling from the UK and the current Foreign Office advice is to not travel within 20km of the Thailand/Cambodia land border. I was hoping to get a train or coach through, but this looks impossible.

So, is there another way to get between these countries without flying? A ferry or other?
