March 30th Birthday Recs

Hi, I’m turning 30 next year and looking for somewhere internationally to visit with a large lively group. Below are a few wants/comments:

  1. I’m in Chicago so would love somewhere warm and with a beach
  2. I originally wanted to do St. Marteen, but Airbnbs are only allowing a 5 night stay, instead of 4. I’ve visited during Covid and loved it, frankly I’ve been to a lot of islands and it’s been my favorite because of how lively it is. We’d like to bar hop, have excursions, huge night life, basically lots of options to keep us busy.
  3. It’ll be a group of 20+.
  4. I don’t want to go to Mexico, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, or Dr because I’ve been to all plenty of times.
  5. Somewhere not too touristy
  6. Also considered Columbia if anyone has comments?
  7. Not looking to stay on a resort but instead rent a house

Trying to find cheap international flights for a random weekend trip

Started planning a birthday trip with my husband and now I'm kinda spiraling over the flight prices lol. We decided on London since we're both big fans of England, but we live in Canada and everything I'm finding feels expensive. Where do you guys check for international cheap flights? We are big fans of England and would love to go there. I started to think maybe I'm not really good at searching for flights. I need honest advice.

U18 travel to portugal from london help needed

Me (17) and my gf (17) are travelling to Lisbon, portugal on august 31st. We have accommodation and flights found that accommodate u18s and we have a parental consent letter. We are unsure whether this consent letter needs to be legalised by the gov, some sources say yes some say no and we are stuck. Same with getting parent signatures witnessed by solicitors some sources say yes and some say no.

Just wondering if anyone here has any advice, i tried r/traveladvice but they only advise 18+ sadly.

Whole situation is causing loads of stress and if anyone could provide any advice, small or big, it would be greatly appreciated!

Do travel assistant services actually help when things go wrong?

I’m 32, based in Amsterdam and work remotely, so I end up flying around Europe fairly often for client meetings. A few months ago I had one of those travel days where everything went wrong. My train from Lisbon was delayed and then cancelled, I reached the airport too late for check in and I had to book another flight and rearrange a meeting in Amsterdam. Nothing catastrophic, just a lot of unnecessary stress. Since then I’ve been looking at travel-assistant services that offer things like itinerary reminders, flight updates, help with disruptions and other travel related support. My trip online was one of the services I came across while comparing them, along with a couple of others. The part I’m unsure about is what actually happens when there’s a real problem. Getting a reminder about a flight is useful but the bigger question is whether these services can genuinely help with cancellations, rescheduling, refunds or changes, or whether they ultimately just send you back to the airline. I’m also curious whether people find the extra features genuinely useful or whether most of them are things you can already handle yourself through the airline’s app. I’m not looking to promote any particular service. I’m more curious about whether having this kind of service has actually made travel easier for frequent travelers.

AA Los Angeles - London

Hi all. I’m a very experienced traveller mainly with short haul travel within Europe and Africa with your typical 737s and A320s, however I do occasionally fly between London and Canada/US. My flight tomorrow leaves LA at 4:30PM on a 787-9 and just wanted advice on seats for 3 of us. we’re all around 6 feet tall and at the moment have the option of seats 32ABC or 38DEF (very back of the plane). On the way out we had the back seats on a 777 in the middle and i found that I liked it due to the ability to stroll around and close to the toilet. Anyone have any specific recommendation on which to choose? And for sleep it would realistically only be one of us who can manage to sleep anyway. thanks

Trip destinations in December with 1yo

My husband and I (from India) are planning a 7–8 day trip to celebrate our baby’s first birthday. Since we’ll be travelling with a baby, we’d prefer a destination with short travel time, a relaxed pace, and a flexible itinerary rather than a packed schedule.
We were initially considering Sri Lanka because of the relatively short travel time, but we’d love to explore other options as well.
I’d also really appreciate any tips or suggestions for travelling internationally with a one-year-old—things to keep in mind while choosing the destination, accommodation, transportation, food, and activities.
Would love to hear your recommendations and experiences!

Tourists need to give way more context to their questions

They should state their travel experience, travel preferences, mobility, budget, country of residence/origin, dietary preferences /restriction.

Not, hey. 3 friends are coming, tell us something cool to do. Just use an AI, ffs then.

Is business class worth the extra money?

I will be traveling internationally for the first time and will be alone (52F). Flying from DC to Turkey will be over 13 hours. Kind of a once in a lifetime trip so I’m debating between a regular ticket and business class. Is it worth the extra money for a business class ticket?

Which travel sites for last minute vacations?

My whole approach to travel is 'plan everything months ahead' and I'm starting to think it's costing me money. A friend booked a flight and hotel six days out last month and paid less than I did booking the same destination eight weeks earlier.

Been browsing Super. com for last minute weekends and the deals are solid, but I know people swear by Hopper for flight and hotel combos and Booking. com for straight hotel searches. Not sure I've given either a real shot for last minute specifically.

What sites have worked for you when you're booking close to the date?

Help us decide for May 2027

Hi all,

We‘re a family of three with a young child that will start school in 2027. We‘re based in Western Europe.

Before being bound to school holidays for the foreseeable future, we want to take a 3-4 week trip in May 2027. Unfortunately we only have May available due to other commitments and planned trips - can‘t leave earlier, can‘t return any later than first week of June.

We are torn between a couple of destinations / trips but unsure what to choose for best weather, value for money and a good mix of cities (living in a big city and our kid enjoys the hustle and bustle of cities as much as we do), culture and nature. Ideally with a warmer stop that allows us to relax/swim for a few days.

Currently our top contender is Toronto - Vancouver - Vancouver Island - Hawaii (preferrably Oahu, or else Maui). We feel like it would hit our sweet spot, especially since we‘d be able to visit our friends in Canada whom we really miss. But all my research points to West Coast Canada being better in the summer (so far we‘ve only been to the East Coast) and despite it being shoulder season, Hawaii is quite expensive (we enjoy good hotels and wouldn‘t want to downgrade much). Wondering if it‘s really worth the money, and hoping some if you could share your experience of West Canada and/or Hawaii in May.

Other contenders are
- Japan, maybe combined with Singapur and/or Thailand (we‘ve been before and are also worried about flying east due to the Middle East situation but seems to be ideal weather- and money-wise right now)

- Australia (travel time and cost of flights are a bit off-putting with a 5yo in tow)

- Toronto (to visit our friends) + then fly out to a Caribbean island e.g. Barbados or Turks and Caicos just for the beach vibes, or do a road trip through Costa Rica (honestly this is my second favorite option)

Excited to hear what you think and get some advice on what to do!

First West Coast Road Trip: Can We Actually Pull This Off in Winter?

Hi everyone! I’m planning a family road trip to the US West Coast from December 24 to January 2, and I’d love some advice on our itinerary.

This will be our first time doing this route. We’re not very outdoorsy and don’t plan on doing long/strenuous hikes (I can do some by myself). We’re more interested in scenic drives, viewpoints, cities, and seeing the major sights. We’re also a vegetarian family.

Here’s our rough itinerary:

Dec 24 – Los Angeles
• Land in LA and rest

Dec 25 – Universal Studios Hollywood
• Full day at Universal

Dec 26 – Los Angeles
• Explore LA / sightseeing

Dec 27 – LA → Santa Barbara → Death Valley
• Drive toward Santa Barbara
• Continue toward Death Valley
• Overnight around Death Valley

Dec 28 – Death Valley → Grand Canyon
• Some sightseeing / easier trails in the morning at death valley
• Long drive to the Grand Canyon

Dec 29 – Grand Canyon
• Full day at the park
• Viewpoints / easier trails

Dec 30 – Grand Canyon → Las Vegas
• Drive to Vegas
• Explore Vegas in the evening

Dec 31 – Las Vegas → Joshua Tree
• Drive to Joshua Tree
• Explore the park

Jan 1 – Joshua Tree → Los Angeles
• Some sightseeing / easier trail
• Drive back to LA

Jan 2 – Fly out of LA

A few questions I’d really appreciate advice on:

  1. Is this itinerary too ambitious for late December?
  2. Are there any roads/areas on this route that are particularly risky or likely to be affected by winter weather?
  3. Is Death Valley → Grand Canyon in one day realistic, or should we change the itinerary?
  4. Would you recommend spending more/less time at any of these places?
  5. Are there any easy trails or viewpoints you’d recommend at Death Valley, Grand Canyon, or Joshua Tree?
  6. Should we be concerned about park/road closures around Christmas and New Year’s, and how far in advance should we be checking?
  7. Would you recommend booking hotels in advance for this period, especially around the Grand Canyon and Death Valley?
  8. Is there anything obvious that we’re missing or that you would change completely?

We’re happy to cut things out if the itinerary is too rushed. The priority is to have an enjoyable trip rather than spend the entire vacation driving.

Thanks in advance!

What are some lesser known spots nearby the big tourist destinations that most people miss?

Mine are Pereira Colombia. Stunningly beautiful in the heart of Coffee country.
And old Town Phuket. Super quaint, laid back beach vibes with some of the best food I've ever had. And a fun motor bike ride from the craziness of the west coast

Some general advice needed

I read through the posts and didn’t see anything that specifically addresses my questions, so here goes:

I am going to Mongolia in September 2026. We are staying in the capital for a conference and will remain for about a week and a half after the conference is over. I am interested in booking day tours.

I know it’s a big country and I know I won’t get to see all of it. We are seniors, pretty fit. I have read not to book tours in advance. Any suggestions? Recommended tour operators? I am not the kind of person who needs to plan every thing down to the minute, but I like to have a general idea.

Also, any tips if one or both of us needs to see a doctor? (I do not plan to get on a horse. 🙂). We have insurance. I had to see a doctor when we were in Korea a few months ago and it was a good experience, considering the fact that I had to see a doctor.

I do have a guide book and, for awhile at least, we will be with natives and people who have traveled in Mongolia. Just want some preliminary information.

Thanks.

I need car rental suggestions in Cluj Napoca

First time visiting Cluj napoca so I don’t really know the rental options there. Need a car for a few days and looking for something reasonably priced. I’ve checked a few options online, but would rather go with something people actually recommend. Any suggestions?

Working stops into a long flight

Hey everyone, my wife and I have an event to go to early next year out of country. We're here in indiana and will be traveling to a small island outside of Thailand.

30+ hours of juggling airports sounds awful though and we already planned on taking a Japan trip in the next year or two so would like to work in a few days there on the way and break the flight up.

What we would like to try to do is go from Indianapolis (IN) to Tokyo for a few days, then would need to go Tokyo -> Bangkok -> koh samui (island only accessible by small plane)

Never tried working holdovers into a trip before. Is the easiest way going to be round trip tickets to Tokyo and work in round trip tickets from Bangkok? Talked about just reaching out to a travel agent to ease our minds on all the time differences.

Any tips/advice is appreciated!

Can’t decide on my Honeymoon

I can’t decide where to go on my honeymoon, my husband is letting me pick!

- African Safari + beach time (thinking Tanzania or Kenya)
- Australia (I have no idea what part)
- somewhere tropical (French Polynesia, Fiji, or Maldives)

Planning for around 2 week trip including travel days (from either Chicago or Minneapolis)
Wanting to spend under 20k total
We love wildlife / sea life, want to relax but also have some adventure. Into surfing, snorkeling, eating good food, boat excursions.
Don’t mind hiking but probably wouldn’t do more than 1 hike.
If you’ve been to any of those places I’d love some input!

Bachelor/Bachelorette Trip Advice/Ideas?

My fiancé and I are planning a joint bachelor/bachelorette trip for July 2027 since we have so much overlap in the friend group (some of my closest friends are groomsmen and vice versa). We want to do something where we flew out on a Thursday, enjoyed a relaxing Friday and Saturday, then flew back on a Sunday. We'd like to do something beachy (think the Bahamas, Cancun, etc.). We're not big into nightlife but we like to have a good drink. The more inclusive of the price, the better.

Does anyone have any ideas or travel agencies I should look into? It the two of us, 12 in the wedding party, and up to 10 more people if partners also join. Thank you in advance!

I'm just starting this planning process and was searching reddit for ideas when I quite literally thought, "you know, I could just make a post." Thanks Reddit!
