Why does my British accent make me sound stupid when I sing

I just wanna sing fun pop songs but when I play back the recording I cringe so hard at how I pronounce some words. It’s like this weird mix of British and American, but neither fully this nor that, and it sounds really formal!? Does anyone else know what I mean 🥲

Seeking perspectives from current doctors who did GEM from another career: do you regret switching?

Was planning to apply to GEM this year but the posts from the doctors subreddit are really making me get cold feet.

Would really appreciate some honest thoughts from people who switched to medicine from another career. I’m not sure how much of the negativity is just a case of “grass is greener”, from people who’ve never had corporate jobs.

Lots of posts about pay seem to go along the lines of “doctors are smart and driven, they would be earning so much more in other fields”. But I’m here thinking that these other jobs also require long (often unpaid) working hours, stress and pressure to hit targets, corporate politics, job insecurity, toxic bosses and management, being treated as a PowerPoint and spreadsheet monkey at junior levels.

Sure maybe if you really value “perks” like catered meals or a company car or whatever, but they don’t really offset the feeling of existential dread that slowly sets in when you realise your work is utterly meaningless.

Fully aware I’m comparing my own work experiences to an idealised version of medicine, that’s why I’m interested in hearing from people already inside the system.

Excited to read responses!

People say they found the career they want by trying different jobs. What should I do if the careers that I’m interested in each requires long postgrad training that I have to commit years of my life to?

I just turned 24 and honestly feel so behind and lost. My BSc degree was in biomedical science, I loved the content and want my career to be related to life science.

There are two careers I’m seriously considering - R&D in biotech/pharma and medicine (in a pathology specialty). I had a lab-based internship at a pharma company and enjoyed it, but I’m more concerned about the day to day as you move up the career ladder. Seems to become more meetings and management than science.

Different things also attract me to medicine and pathology in particular, can focus on diagnosis, stability, always a need for doctors, paid much better than scientists in UK, you actually do more of the work as you progress in training. Downside is I won’t be contributing to invent cool scientific treatments.

Basically I’m just heavily conflicted. I’ll likely have to get a PhD for the biotech path, or go to med school to become a doctor. Feels like a lot of time wasted if I have regrets down the line.

(UK) best way to know reality of being a vet?

Trying to decide between human medicine or vet med. I like science and biology and problem solving so I would be pretty happy working as a human doctor, but I just feel I’m more passionate about animal welfare in general. I currently volunteer at an animal shelter, just cleaning pens and scooping litter trays, and this is honestly the highlight of my week. When my life gets more stable I also want to start fostering animals.

Part of me thinks great, if I like science and medicine, and I also like animals, I should just combine my interests! But I’m also aware I’m looking at being a vet through rose-tinted glasses. What type of work experience would best show me the reality? Shadowing, actually working at a vet clinic?

Is the NG exercise meant to sound muffled and dampened?

I’m a beginner.

My teacher says my sound is stuck at the back of my throat and it doesn’t want to come forward, so we have been working on this.

I have been doing the siNG exercise but I don’t know if I’m doing it wrong or something because the sound is like dampened when I’m holding NG? Don’t we want the sound to be bright.

He also has me doing NAY NAY NAYs in like a bratty tone but my throat hurts at the end of it so I don’t think my technique is right.

Any help would be appreciated thank you!
