“Less Is More”: Kids Mode Deluxe for OnionOS (with a Built-In Video Player)

I loved the original Kids Mode created by u/daverad, so I started modifying it to better suit my needs.

Then I wanted to do the same for videos. FFplay felt too complicated for a child, so I tried to make video playback as simple as possible.

Kids Mode Deluxe now brings everything together in one app:

  • One section for games and another for videos
  • The option to lock the app to Games only or Videos only
  • A shared timer
  • Automatic resume based on what was running when the console was turned off
  • Simple, restricted controls designed for kids

You can download it here:
https://github.com/Veuks/onion-kids-mode/releases/tag/v1.0.0

Give it a try, and let me know what you think!

⚠️ Please read the README before installing—it explains the setup, controls and video folder structure.

Everything was built through vibe coding… and a little coffee. ☕

A quick update on Kids Mode

Hello, everyone

In the version I posted yesterday, a line of code was missing that was necessary for the “autoresume last game” feature to work.

Here is a new version, where this feature is now an option that can be enabled or disabled in the “Parent Menu.”

Happy gaming!

The MM(+) is NOW the BEST handheld console for KIDS

Thanks to Onion OS, the MM(+) is already one of the most user-friendly consoles, compared to consoles running on Android, for example. With Kids Mode, it’s simply perfect for kids—or even for lending to friends who don’t want to deal with setting up an OS and RetroArch.

Thanks to u/daverad for his initial work on the Kids Mode app, which I discovered through this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/MiyooMini/comments/1vbhubd/kids_mode_for_onionos_favoritesonly_kidfriendly/

I made a few changes with Claude Code's help to make it truly perfect:

- RetroArch in-game shortcuts (save/load state, quick menu, etc.) are now disabled during Kids Mode sessions

- Separation of saves/save states/thumbnails between the child profile and the standard/guest profile (without affecting shared RetroArch settings)

- Timer limit: 50 minutes before → now 120 minutes

- Added an X-button icon in the carousel to restart a game from the beginning

- Battery level can now be checked in the carousel by holding Y+B (works with or without the timer enabled)

- Auto-resume the last game at startup

- Return to the current game when returning to the carousel, rather than to the beginning of the favorites list

- Line break for game titles that are too long

I didn't do this properly through GitHub because I lack experience with the process, but here's the compressed file for anyone who wants to give it a try (limited to 30 days and 250 downloads), to be pasted into the App folder :

Edit : a new version here

Personally, I use Guest mode to select my favorites and use Kids mode, so as not to interfere with the main profile I use for myself.

And to get the same look as in my photo, you need to scrape your games using ScreenScraper Mix V1.

I hesitated to force an automatic restart—that is, to disable the automatic save feature—in order to get as close as possible to the experience we had back in the days of physical hardware, because I think that waiting and frustration are part of a gaming experience that today's young people won't get to experience, but I didn't do it.

Happy gaming

California is beautiful

I'm from Alsace, France, and I've always dreamed of visiting the U.S. and experiencing the atmosphere you see in American movies.
