I was granted a two-year UK visa today and was told that I would receive an eVisa instead of a vignette in my passport.

The issue is that I already had a UKVI account from 2023, which I created for the UK–India Young Professionals Scheme ballot. That account is linked to my previous Indian passport, ending in X241, and originally had my old Indian phone number. I have since updated the phone number to my current Dutch number. The email address on that account is the same one I used for my new visa application.

I now live in the Netherlands and applied for this new visa using my new Indian passport, Dutch phone number, and current address.

I can still access the old UKVI account, but I cannot see my newly granted eVisa there. More importantly, there does not seem to be any option to update or add my new passport.

I am now quite confused and concerned about the next steps. How can I update the passport details on the old UKVI account, and how do I get my newly granted eVisa linked to it?

I posted this on the bigger thread but noticed it got buried. Given plenty of lack of clarity and usual lack of journalistic integrity by our media, sharing this for wider visibility.

#It seems most people are missing what the MEA actually said. The statement was very carefully worded:

> A passport is not conclusive proof of citizenship.

Key word is conclusive.

A passport is strong evidence that you’re a citizen, but it does not confirm citizenship.

Your citizenship comes from the Indian Citizenship Act, not from the passport itself. In fact, when you apply for the passport on Passport Seva, the government asks you on what basis you are an Indian citizen - by birth, descent, or registration/naturalization. Government does check the documents to assess whether you satisfy the condition (eg. by birth then what sort of documents are needed that you'd share) but there is always a possibility of error - happy to share examples.

Why does this distinction matter?

• First, passports can be issued in error. You might be a Bangladeshi refugee and can make fraudulent documents and apply on the basis of them. You will be issued a passport in error but that does not mean you were legally a citizen. Government is clarifying this stance so that tomorrow, you don't use the argument of "but I was issued a passport anyway = hence, I am a citizen!", deriving permanent rights from this.

• There is the other side to this too. India does not permit dual citizenship; if you apply for a US citizenship, you forfeit Indian citizenship. Legally, you must surrender Indian passport and apply for Surrender certificate etc. However, in case you don't do that and keep the passport, that does not imply you are legally an Indian citizen anymore. That is what the statement implies; just because you hold Indian passport, does not imply you are necessarily an Indian citizen.

Secondly, this sort of legal position is not unique to India.

There is an interesting example of Andre Geim, a Nobel laureate, originally a Dutch citizen. Netherlands, like India, does not permit Dual citizenship but Geim apparently wasn't aware. He lived in the UK and became a British citizen in 2012. Under Dutch law, that automatically meant he lost Dutch citizenship. But its not like someone came knocking on his door to confiscate his passport. Between 2012-2025, he continued using his Dutch passport for years because the authorities hadn’t yet acted on the change. In 2025, he was informed that he was not a Dutch citizen and had to surrender it. Point is: holding passport or even exercising the privilege did not imply he was legally a citizen anymore.

Legally, the passport reflected what the authorities believed at the time it was issued—it didn’t override nationality law.

So what is proof of Indian citizenship?

Well, India does not have a single certificate that it issues if you are a natural-born citizen (that is, you'd citizenship from birth). Authorities, if they ever come to doubt you, will look at not one but multiple documents and then form a thorough opinion. Rather than fear/panic etc, the takeaway here is to ensure your identity documents are in order.

Ik (34M) en mijn vrouw (27F) zijn expats die in Nederland wonen. Vorig jaar hebben we een appartement gekocht met een hypotheek van 30 jaar (met NHG) en binnenkort verwachten we ons eerste kind.

Met deze nieuwe gezinsverantwoordelijkheden wil ik graag een levensverzekering afsluiten om mijn vrouw en kind financieel te beschermen als mij iets zou overkomen. We zijn allebei gezond, roken niet, drinken niet en hebben geen noemenswaardige medische voorgeschiedenis. Daarnaast lijkt het me verstandig om dit nu te regelen voordat de premies verder stijgen met de leeftijd.

Voorlopig denk ik aan een overlijdensrisicoverzekering van ongeveer €750.000 met een looptijd van 20-25 jaar.

Een paar vragen:

1. Ik verdien aanzienlijk meer dan mijn vrouw. Is het logisch om alleen mij te verzekeren, of is het verstandig dat we allebei een levensverzekering afsluiten?
2. Is een dekking voor terminale ziekte doorgaans de moeite waard?
3. We verwachten nog een paar jaar in Nederland te blijven, maar waarschijnlijk niet permanent (>7–8 jaar). Zijn er polissen die vermogen opbouwen of waarbij je een deel van de betaalde premie kunt terugkrijgen als je de verzekering later beëindigt of naar het buitenland verhuist? Ik heb dergelijke opties gezien via Independer, maar het is me niet duidelijk hoe aantrekkelijk die in de praktijk zijn.

Daarnaast hoor ik graag persoonlijke ervaringen (positief of negatief) met specifieke verzekeraars of producten in Nederland.

I’m in Shanghai for a few days and would like to buy some smaller electronics items (think power banks - but not slow Miniso ones - and Oral-B or Xiaomi electric toothbrush etc. Where can I buy these items, ideally in one place?
