Another Vinyl Tonight: Duran Duran - Seven and The Ragged Tiger (1983)

This is their third studio album. The album's title was devised by Le Bon and taken from the unreleased track of the same name. The "seven" refers to the five band members and their two managers, while the "ragged tiger" is success: "Seven people running after success. It's ambition. That's what it's about.", says LeBon.

This would be the last studio record with the original band until 2004.

Vinyl Tonight: Loudness - Thunder in The East (1985)

This is the fifth studio release, and this record is 41 years old! The song ‘Crazy Nights’ still hits just like it used too from this Japanese band. If you have heard this song, and the chant that goes with it after the chorus, it is ... "M-Z-A". This chant came about when producer Max Norman asked lead vocalist Minoru Niihara to come up with something to sing over the main riff between the chorus and next verse. "M-Z-A!" means nothing, and it was intended to be replaced with another line in post-production. When Niihara could not come up with anything to replace it, the "M-Z-A!" chant survived.

In 1985 they finally signed an international record deal with Atco Records, through the management of Twisted Sister band, co-manager Joe Gerber. The band has released 28 studio records, with five licensed in the United States, along with eleven live albums.

Vinyl Tonight: Michael Jackson - Off the Wall (1979)

What a great sounding record! This was Michael Jackson's fifth studio album, and it was the first of his records to be produced by legend, Quincy Jones. Five singles were released from Off the Wall, but these two were Billboard Hot 100 #1 singles:

  • Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
  • Rock with You

The tracks were recorded at several different studios in the Los Angeles area, but after the initial recordings, the mixing was sent to Bruce Swedien at Westlake Audio, and then he sent the original tapes over to A&M Recording Studio, in L.A., for final mastering.

This is a great example of audio mastering perfection of the 1970's and 1980's, where they were recorded hot but were very dynamic. Not a total squashed/compressed mess like much of today's pop is.

Vinyl Tonight: Saraya - S/T (1989)

This is a pretty cool band. In 1987, lead singer Sandra Saraya, and keyboardist Gregg Munier, began playing together under the name Alice Lorraine (see track #6 as a veiled reference). Tie back to my previous Danger Danger post, later on in 1987 they were joined by the guitarist from Danger Danger, Tony "Bruno" Rey. This is the guy who played in both bands and recorded some on Danger Danger's debut, as well.

This is a pretty good record that I like, and I really loved how melodic Sandra was on vocals.

Vinyl Tonight: Danger Danger - S/T (1989)

Awe man ... Danger Danger. It was late Summer of 1989 when I stumbled upon this band. They had formed a few years earlier, in 1986, and this was their first official release, in 1989. I worked in a video & stereo music store (renting movies, selling music, installing car stereos, etc.) and I noticed this cover: I'm pretty sure it was on CD at that time, but that cover! I had recently installed a Clarion head unit into my car along with a bunch of JVC EQs, crossovers, component speakers and 1000 watt of amps with JBL 12 inch subs. And a 1 farad capacitor - and it thumped hard! Popped this CD in and I was hooked.

Incredible sound ... the bass and drums were kickin, the guitars rockin, and Mike Pont on vocals (later replaced by Ted Poley). The vinyl is recorded very well, and I have two copies of this one. One of them, for whatever reason, has some surface gunk on it that makes it noisy. The music was so good I HAD to get me another copy. It was hard to find two copies of a first pressing.

An interesting fact: the guitarist from the band, Saraya, briefly joined Danger Danger in 1988 and recorded some of the licks on this record. I also have Saraya's debut album as well.

Vinyl Tonight: Jackyl - S/T (1992)

This is a killer band, formed not far from Alabama, in Kennesaw, Georgia in 1991. This band is a fusion of hair band & southern rock all rolled together. This self-titled debut album sold over 1 million copies in the United States and is one that I consider their best!

More Vinyl Tonight

Today listening to some vinyl: the fourth studio album from Duran Duran - Notorious (1986).

Legendary Nile Rodgers helped produce this album. Nile was co-founder of the 1970’s band, Chic, so this record has a new funk-jazz feeling.

The recording is very hot and dynamic - well done on mastering!

Federal Taxes on Annuity

Retiring in September 2025, I received zero dollars per month until late March 2026 ... one payment, and then finalized completely. Full pension came in April 2026. The 'estimated' gross (when I was going through application process) had a decent amount and then took out suviorship and FEHB and 'estimated' my net. I also submitted the W-4P for tax withholdings based on my accountant's calculated figure - that's in the package as a PDF. After finalization, my actual net turned out to be nearly the same as what I was 'estimated' for and waited on since September ... cool. But then I realized that my actual gross was less by about $400. So, I start looking (still happy to finally get paid) and I see they ignored the W-4P and just take out about $40/mo. for taxes.

I was wondering what you guys are having taken out for taxes, or are you paying at the table in April? Did OPM automatically take the correct amount out or did you submit a W-4P? I can't see how I would not be short by several thousand come April 2027.
