Should I Stay in the VFX Industry as an FX Artist or Leave It?

Hey everyone, I’m currently working/studying toward becoming an FX Artist focused on Houdini, simulations, destruction, pyro, crowds, etc. But lately I’ve been seeing a lot of negativity around the VFX industry — layoffs, unstable projects, AI discussions, long working hours, outsourcing, low salaries in some countries, and people leaving the industry after years. At the same time, I still see amazing artists doing incredible work on films, games, cinematics, and building successful careers remotely or freelance. So I wanted to ask honestly from people already in the industry: Is it still worth staying in VFX in 2026? As an FX Artist specifically, do you think the future is stable or risky? If you could restart your career today, would you still choose VFX? What skills are safest for the next 5–10 years? Is moving toward Technical Art, realtime FX, pipelines, or tools becoming more important? Can someone realistically build a good life financially in this field now? I genuinely love Houdini and simulation work, but sometimes the industry discussions online make it feel scary and uncertain. Would really appreciate honest opinions from juniors, seniors, freelancers, and studio artists. Thanks.

Why are Realtime FX Artists suddenly becoming one of the most valuable roles in the industry?

I’ve been noticing a huge shift recently.

A few years ago, most people around me only talked about:

  • film FX
  • destruction sims
  • explosions
  • cinematic work

But now it feels like realtime FX artists are everywhere.

Unreal Engine 5, Niagara, Houdini pipelines, procedural workflows, optimization, GPU particles, gameplay FX, crowds, simulations… the demand feels completely different now.

What’s interesting is that realtime FX artists seem to sit in a weird middle ground:

  • artist
  • technical artist
  • optimizer
  • sometimes even gameplay support

And honestly… it feels harder than people think.

Making a beautiful cinematic explosion is one thing.

Making it:

  • realtime
  • optimized
  • gameplay readable
  • scalable
  • multiplayer safe
  • GPU friendly
  • console friendly

…feels like an entirely different skillset.

I’m currently learning Houdini + procedural FX + realtime workflows, and the more I learn, the more I realize realtime FX artists are basically becoming hybrid technical artists.

Especially now with:

  • UE5
  • Houdini Engine
  • procedural pipelines
  • realtime cinematics
  • virtual production
  • AI-assisted workflows

It feels like the line between:
“FX Artist”
and
“Technical Artist”
is slowly disappearing.

Curious what senior artists think:

  • Is realtime FX becoming more valuable than traditional FX?
  • Will Houdini + Unreal become the standard combo?
  • What skill separates average realtime FX artists from top-tier ones?

Would genuinely love to hear industry perspectives.

ASUS TUF F15 RAM Upgrade for Houdini FX / VFX Work — Worth Going 64GB?

Hey everyone, I’m currently using an ASUS TUF F15 with RTX 3050 + i5 11th Gen for Houdini FX work (mainly pyro, particles, vellum, and crowd sims). Right now I’m thinking about upgrading RAM because heavy sims are starting to eat all the memory. Especially during: Pyro caches High-res smoke/fire Crowd simulations Flip fluids Multiple apps open together (Houdini + Nuke + Chrome etc.) A lot of people online are saying: Official support = 32GB But many users tested 64GB successfully So I wanted real-world VFX feedback from people using Houdini professionally. Questions: Has anyone here tested 64GB RAM on ASUS TUF F15/i5 11th Gen models? Does Houdini actually benefit a lot from going 32GB → 64GB? For mid/high-res pyro sims, what was the biggest improvement after upgrading RAM? Is dual-channel 2x32GB stable for long simulation sessions? Would you prioritize RAM upgrade first or eventually move toward desktop/workstation for serious FX work? I mainly want smoother workflow and fewer crashes during caching/simulation. Would love feedback from FX artists, TDs, or anyone doing Houdini sims professionally.

ASUS says my TUF F15 supports only 32GB RAM… but many users are running 64GB. What’s the REAL limit?

I have an ASUS TUF Gaming F15 FX506HC with:

  • i5-11400H
  • RTX 3050
  • 16GB DDR4 3200MHz

I mainly use it for:

  • Houdini FX
  • Crowd Simulation
  • Unreal Engine
  • heavy multitasking

and honestly 16GB is getting destroyed already 😭

The confusing part is:

  • ASUS official support says 32GB max
  • but I found multiple Reddit users running 64GB (2x32GB) successfully
  • some even said newer BIOS versions fixed memory compatibility issues
  • while a few people reported boot loops / black screen with certain RAM kits

Intel’s website says the i5-11400H memory controller can technically handle way more than 32GB, so now I’m confused whether this is:

  • a BIOS limitation
  • ASUS validation limit
  • or just RAM compatibility roulette

I also checked:

wmic memphysical get maxcapacity

and my system reports support beyond 64GB 🤯

So now I’m stuck between:

  • going safe with 32GB
  • or risking 64GB for future-proof Houdini work

People with:

  • FX506HC
  • FX506H
  • TUF F15 2021 series

please share:

  • your exact RAM kit
  • BIOS version
  • whether 64GB actually worked stable long-term
  • any issues with crashes/boot

I feel like ASUS should officially clarify this because the community experience is completely mixed right now.

Would love to hear real-world experiences before I spend money on a 64GB kit 🙏

Can my ASUS TUF F15 handle mid-level Houdini simulations after upgrades?

Hey everyone, Currently I’m using an ASUS TUF F15 with: Intel i5 11th Gen RTX 3050 4GB 16GB RAM (8x2 dual channel) 1TB SSD For learning Houdini it’s been decent so far — particles, small pyro, vellum, basic destruction, and crowd practice run okay. But once simulations get bigger, RAM becomes the main bottleneck. I’m planning these upgrades: 64GB RAM Future 2TB SSD upgrade for sim caches/projects My goal isn’t ultra-heavy Hollywood-scale FX, but comfortable mid-level simulations and portfolio-quality work like: Mid-scale pyro FLIP fluids Crowd simulations Destruction shots Vellum cloth/grains Environment FX I know the RTX 3050 4GB is entry-level for heavy GPU work, but I’m hoping the RAM upgrade will improve overall Houdini performance a lot, especially sim handling and caching. Do you guys think this setup would become solid enough for serious Houdini learning and mid-level simulation work after upgrading to 64GB RAM? Also curious how much real-world difference people noticed after moving from 16GB to 64GB for Houdini sims.

Hey guys, I wanted to understand the realistic salary range for a Senior FX Artist (Houdini) with ~10 years of experience working in top Indian studios (like DNEG, Industrial Light & Magic, Framestore, etc.). From what I’ve researched and heard from people in the industry: Mid-level artists (3–6 yrs) are usually around ₹5–10 LPA Senior artists typically land somewhere around ₹12–20 LPA+ In some cases (especially top studios / international projects), it can go ₹20–40 LPA or more depending on skill level and role But I feel this varies a lot based on: Studio (Indian vs international pipeline) Skill level (average vs highly technical Houdini artist) Role (Senior vs Lead vs Supervisor) Negotiation + switching companies So I wanted to ask people who are actually working in the industry: 👉 What’s the real in-hand / CTC range for a 10+ year Senior FX Artist in India right now? 👉 And how much difference is there between mid studios vs top studios? Would really appreciate honest insights 🙌
