System design from pond to drip tape

I am putting together an irrigation system for a small commercial garden, and with my limited knowledge I am running into a few problems. I am pulling water from a 15' deep pond using a 2" line and jet pump, and I will be irrigating with drip tape. My intake is about 4' from the bottom, and I have bubblers running in the pond.

Main problem: sub-surface algae in pond is rapidly clogging my manual 130 micron disc filter. Even with regular cleanings, the filter clogs rapidly and turns anaerobic - my guess is the bacteria breaks down the biological material - and causes a swampy smell when the irrigation turns on.

What are my options? From what I can gather:

  1. A simple lake water inlet to help pre-screen the water before it hits the disc filter - although this might turn into a hassle if it needs frequent cleaning.

  2. A semi-automatic or automatic disc filter.

Are there other options I should be looking into? Perhaps adding fish to the pond to decrease the algae, using a floating inlet, or something else? Are there any other specifics I should be looking into (secondary filters before the drip tape, valves for automation, etc.)?

Thanks in advance!

Recommend a thin and slicey farm knife

Hi everyone!

I work outdoors in varying conditions, and a fixed blade make so much sense - easy to clean, quick access, no pivots to worry about. I've carried a Grohmann #2 flat grind for the past year or so, and it works so well. I would like an upgrade, particularly with the blade steel. Do I need an upgrade? Probably not...but that's another story.

The things I like:

  • ergos are fantastic, but I would like some sort of guard or choil for push cuts when my hands are wet and dirty. I've had to be extra careful in the past that my fingers don't end up on the blade.
  • full coverage leather sheath has enough retention, rides low on the belt, and also allows for fast and easy one handed access
  • full flat grind and a thin blade. I used a micrometer, the blade is just over 2mm at it's thickest point. It's amazingly slicey, especially when it comes to things like cutting irrigation pipe, etc. where a thicker knife would bind.
  • handle size fits my hand well

Things I don't like:

  • blade steel, lack of prominent finger guard

What I want:

  • Most important: under 2.5mm thick (or 0.1") blade, with a full flat grind
  • Magnacut, AEB-L, 14C28N, or similar steel. Looking for a good work steel that can still be rapidly touched up
  • full coverage leather sheath

Thanks!
