My RIF Story

My transition from corporate life to full-time content creation was defined by an unexpected clash between traditional employment, modern workplace habits, and organizational restructuring.

For a long time, I balanced my responsibilities on the payments team with a growing passion for digital content creation. What started as casual experimentation on social media gradually evolved into a serious pursuit as my reels gained traction. However, this dual-track lifestyle inevitably raised eyebrows within my organization. When my manager discovered my public-facing content, leadership responded with swift skepticism, viewing my creative pursuits as a liability rather than a harmless hobby.

Consequently, I was placed on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP). At the time, this felt deeply demoralizing and discriminatory. My core performance metrics were steady, and my creative work took place entirely outside of working hours. The PIP converted a familiar job into a high-pressure environment characterized by heavy scrutiny and professional tension, amplifying my burnout and forcing me to reevaluate my career trajectory.

The turning point arrived in January during a company-wide Reduction in Force (RIF), resulting in my termination. While losing a job is naturally stressful, it served as a catalyst. Stripped of corporate obligations, I channeled my undivided energy into my digital channels, allowing my side hustle to scale into a viable, full-time business free from corporate friction.

The most surprising plot twist, however, occurred months later when my former manager called to clear the air. He revealed that my departure during the RIF was never actually driven by my content creation or public-facing reels. Instead, the core issue was coffee badging—the practice of swiping into the office primarily to secure a complimentary coffee and social presence before retreating back home. Management had not been evaluating my Instagram metrics; they had simply been tracking my physical absence from the desk. This revelation reframed the entire ordeal, highlighting the humorous disconnect between corporate surveillance, modern work habits, and the unexpected catalysts that can redirect one's professional life.
