Does anyone else feel like the Japanese version of Pokémon just hits harder than the English dub?
I want to start this off by saying this isn’t meant to hate on the English dub at all. I actually grew up watching the English version of Pokémon, so there’s a lot of nostalgia there, and I still respect everyone who prefers it.
That said… after watching the Japanese version, I honestly find it difficult to go back.
For me, it’s not just the language—it’s the overall presentation.
One of the biggest examples is Pokémon XYZ. Whenever Ash (Satoshi) and Greninja synchronize into Ash-Greninja (Satoshi-Gekkouga), the Japanese version often plays the opening theme or an insert song during those climactic battles. It makes those moments feel absolutely epic. Combined with Rica Matsumoto’s performance as Satoshi, it gives me goosebumps every time.
Meanwhile, in the English dub, those scenes usually use orchestral background music instead. It’s not bad by any means, but for me it doesn’t have the same emotional payoff. The Japanese version just feels like it’s saying, “This is the moment we’ve been building toward.”
I also feel like the original voice actors really go all out during emotional scenes, evolutions, and big battles. The intensity, the shouting, the emotion—it all feels incredibly raw and exciting.
Again, this isn’t me saying the English dub is bad. I know a lot of people (myself included) have fond memories of it, and I completely understand why people prefer watching in their native language. Everyone enjoys anime differently, and that’s perfectly okay.
I’m just curious…
Does anyone else feel this way after watching both versions? Or is it just me? I’d genuinely love to hear opinions from both dub and sub fans, as long as we keep it respectful.
