Winterizing catio

Since it's the middle of August, I figured this is a good time to see what everyone does to winterize the catio!

I got it in April of this year, so it wasn't totally cold at that time. So I have smaller shelters I put inside with straw in them.

It's in my backyard on a cement patio and I have an outdoor outlet next to the catio.

Any suggestions are appreciated!!

30 cats in North Philadelphia

hi there!

I'm new to reddit, so I hope it's okay for me to post this on here.

I am a community cat caretaker in North Philadelphia (19140). I graduated from vet tech school in 2003 and spent the majority of my career in shelter medicine.

Now, I am on the other side of things managing my own colony!

My colony consists of about 30 cats, give or take.

I have a few cats inside that require extra attention, shelters on both my front and back porches, and a catio in my backyard. My "regulars" stay here full-time, while the "give or take" refers to the random neighborhood cats that just show up to eat and live elsewhere.

Almost everyone has been spayed or neutered. The only exceptions are a nursing momma and her babies, but I will make sure to address them as soon as possible!

If you want to see updates, check out my Facebook page where I post pictures of my babies:

I am currently stretched a bit thin and would appreciate some assistance with supplies.

If you're local and have anything you can donate that you don't need like:

Cat and or kitten food (canned & dry )

Litter

Towels, Blankets

Pet beds

Etc

I have also created an Amazon Wishlist here:

Catio for North Philly Colony

I live in North Philadelphia, manage an outdoor cat colony, and am lucky enough to have a backyard. It just so happens that this catio fits perfectly into my space!

I wanted to share this because when I was shopping around for a catio, making a decision was overwhelming—especially due to the prices. I was really nervous about the quality, but I ended up going with this one from Amazon: https://a.co/d/07XtF7SF

I've never put together anything bigger than a dresser before, but I managed to successfully assemble this on my own! My boyfriend just helped me out with the high spots I couldn't reach. Overall, the cats absolutely love it!

It is actually really good quality, has little cubbys they like to sleep with their heads in and bodies out of and for the most part, stays dry (with the help of a tarp in bad rain).

I am very happy with it!

I do have a couple of questions for other catio owners:

How do you cool it down in the summer?

I've been looking into solar fans made for chicken coops. Right now, I'm using cooling mats and keeping the catio open as much as possible (rain permitting).

How do you manage flies at the feeding stations?

I never had issues with flies until about two weeks ago. It got so bad that I had to throw everything away and scrub down the whole area. I am now feeding only twice a day and removing any leftovers after 30 minutes. Does anyone have recommendations for cat-safe fly deterrents?

Thanks in advance for any tips!
