Is 36 Too Late to Start a PhD in Automotive Acoustics in Europe?
Hi everyone,
I’m a 33-year-old engineer from India with 12+ years of experience in automotive NVH simulation, primarily in squeak & rattle and vibroacoustics for plastic and BIW components. I’ve also published three technical papers at SAE conferences.
After spending a decade in industry, I decided to return to academics and am currently pursuing an M.Tech in Automotive Technology at IIT Madras while continuing my career. I’ll be completing my master’s in about three years.
My long-term goal is to pursue a PhD in automotive acoustics, preferably in Europe, focusing on areas such as vibroacoustics, vehicle interior noise, and simulation.
My main concern is my age. By the time I complete my master’s, I’ll be around 36 years old.
Would my age be a disadvantage when applying for PhD positions in Europe? Has anyone started a PhD in their mid-30s after significant industry experience? I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences or any advice regarding universities, supervisors, or funding opportunities.
Thank you!
