Need advice for masters 🇩🇪

Looking for guidance: CS Masters in Germany. need advice from people who’ve actually done this 🙏

Hi everyone, I’m a CS student at LUMS pakistan (Batch of ‘27) looking to do a Masters in Germany in CS or a related field, with the goal of settling there long-term. I have some concerns I’d love guidance on from seniors/alumni who’ve actually gone through this process. Would really appreciate honest, detailed answers

My questions:

1.	Should I work in industry for 1-2 years first, then do a Germany masters, or go straight after undergrad? Does work experience help with job hunting post masters?
2.	How is the job market in Germany right now? I’m getting mixed reviews ,some say Germany is going through a recession and jobs are very difficult to find currently.
3.	How feasible is part-time work to cover monthly living expenses in Germany? Would it affect the degree timeline, and by how many months?
4.	Are all German public universities roughly equal since they’re all public/free, or is there a real ranking for CS-related courses?
5.	What is a realistic (not “official”) timeline for completing a German masters, accounting for delays/part-time work/thesis? I’ve heard on paper it’s 2 years but can take up to 4 years.

Would really appreciate any insight, especially from people whose actual experience didn’t match what’s written online. Thanks in advance! 🙏

I'm 17, and I don't know where to apply for uni

I'm a Russian citizen (unfortunately, I'm planning on a fairly high GPA. It's currently a 5.0, and I plan to keep it that way in 11th grade. For a long time, I thought about pursuing a medical degree, but at the end of 10th grade, I realized I wasn't ready for the responsibilities of a doctor. I chose something more related to math and programming, as I've always had a keen interest in both. I really don't know which country to apply to. Of course, I'd like my future country to also be the place where I build my life and career. I'm primarily considering European countries, and it seems Finland or Sweden would be the best fit for me. I'd like to hear from people living there and elsewhere about where they study and where they could recommend building my life.

University help and cost of living inquiry

University help + cost of living inquiry

Since it’s a bit of a read for some, here’s are the main inquiries:

How is the cost of living in Lisbon and surrounding areas for a student?
Are there any bachelor degrees for computer science and engineering taught in English with a reduced fee for EU citizens (Lisbon and surrounding areas)?

I currently live in Australia, however am a dual citizenship with the EU and Australia. My girlfriend is an EU citizen. She’s fluent in English and German and I’m fluent in English and can speak and understand German to a proficient level. With the current cost of a partners visa in Australia it’s becoming increasingly clear for us what we will be unable to study and live in Australia together. We’ve been together for 2 and a half years and both want to study.

I am an avid surfer and am unsure if I’m able to let surfing go, by moving to Germany for example. Hence why I’m curious on how life is like in Lisbon. I want to study cyber security and my original plan was to do a bachelor of cybersecurity in Australia. Currently there are no almost no bachelors for cyber security in the EU.

As an alternative I thought studying bachelor of computer science and engineering, then doing a masters in cyber security. I was interested in university NOVA in Lisbon, however the cost for a non Portuguese person is far too much for me. Are there any degrees in Lisbon and surrounding area (preferably near the coast) that offer a similar degree, taught in English, with a reduced fee for EU citizens?

As for my girlfriend, she’s unsure of what to study however definitely wants to study something. We both want to start out life is with as minimal debt as possible but are of course accustomed with the current cost of living, so adjustments can be made.

Which is better for Medical School in Europe: American Diploma or Syrian Baccalaureate?

I'm trying to choose between two high school qualifications for studying medicine in Europe.

Option 1:

  • American High School Diploma (Honors)
  • IELTS
  • 3–5 AP exams (Biology, Chemistry, Calculus, Physics)

Option 2:

  • Syrian Baccalaureate with a very high score (around 99%).

My goal is to study medicine in Europe (Italy, Poland, Romania, Cyprus, etc.) and later specialize in Germany.

From a university admissions perspective, which qualification gives me more opportunities? Are there any countries or universities where one is significantly preferred over the other?

I'd especially appreciate answers from people who have applied with either qualification or who work in university admissions.

Best countries/universities for a low-cost or fully funded Master's after a Bachelor's in Spanish?

Hi everyone,

I recently completed my Bachelor's degree in Spanish Language and Literature with a minor in English Literature. I also have 1 year of work experience.

I'm now looking to pursue a Master's degree abroad and would love your suggestions.

My priorities are:

Fully funded scholarships or very low tuition fees

High-quality universities

Good career prospects after graduation

Programs taught in Spanish or English

Which universities or countries would you recommend? I'm open to studying anywhere in the world as long as the education is affordable and worthwhile.

I'd also appreciate any advice on scholarships, application strategies, or programs that would suit my academic background.

Thank you!

PhD in University of Oslo/Norway

Hi everyone! I had an interview at 22 of June in UiO and they told me that the board will decide either late of June or in August. Today is 1 of July and no news. I’m thinking that maybe I got rejected because maybe I would be informally receiving an email that I got it. August feels so far.
The interview I think went good. I just didn’t answer in the best way 2 technical questions (social sciences) but the overall climate seemed nice. They asked me also when I can start if I get the offer, that they will get in touch with my referees, what’s my thoughts of relocation in Oslo. Are these typical questions ? Or they were interested in me?

Do you think I should send an email to the PI and ask what happened with the board?
Please help :( it’s my dream PhD

IB Diploma Recognised in Germany

Hello everyone. I am a student from m-26 currently applying to Germany for my undergrad. These are my subjects:
Group 1: English A HL
Group 2: Hindi B SL
Group 3: ESS SL
Group 4: Physics SL
Group 5: Maths AA HL
Group 6: Computer Science HL
Okay so as you might know ESS does not fit the criteria for a diploma to be recognised in germany. I recently have been rejected by Hochschule Merseberg (via uni-assist) for the same reason. Is there anyone who has the same problem and still went to a public university? Please let me know atp any advice or experience might help.

Non-EU PhD grad staying in Switzerland — how realistic, and does the university's name matter to employers?

Hi all — hoping for honest, grounded input.

I recently finished my Master's and have been offered a fully-funded in-person PhD in Computer Science (HCI/AI) at UniDistance Suisse (in Brig). I'm trying to decide whether to accept, and would really value your input.

A bit of context: I'm a non-EU recent Master's grad, and I've learned some German (A2–B1). I like the topic and the supervisor( she is a young Assistant Professor and very supportive!), but since I'm non-EU, I'm thinking more about life after the PhD:

  1. Staying and working in Switzerland as a non-EU after a Swiss PhD. How hard is it to find a job in Switzerland after a PhD as a non-EU? And how realistic/long is the path to PR?
  2. How is UniDistance Suisse seen by Swiss employers? It's an accredited Swiss university with degree-granting rights (soon to become "University of Wallis"), but is it widely recognized by Swiss employers? Does the university name matter much in the Swiss tech industry compared to your skills and publications?
  3. If I wanted a postdoc (in Switzerland or abroad), would this university be a disadvantage? In academic hiring, how much does the institution's name/ranking weigh versus publications and references — especially when the lab is newer and less known? Would a postdoc search be noticeably harder coming from here?

Any real experiences would be hugely appreciated — and if you can, please mention your perspective (e.g. non-EU who stayed, Swiss PhD, employer/recruiter). Thanks!!!

Is 28 too late to start a master's degree abroad?

I'm 26 and I've always dreamed of pursuing a master's degree abroad. Unfortunately, life didn't go as planned. I struggled for years with different challenges, and it didn t happen.

Now I'm seriously considering applying next year, so by the time i start i will be 28. I can't shake the feeling that I'm too late. I see people finishing their master's in their early 20s, starting their careers, settling down, and I feel like I've fallen behind.

At the same time, education has always meant a lot to me. It's not just about career it's something I've always wanted for myself, and achieving it would make me feel like I finally fulfilled a dream. I know part of it is also tied to my sense of validation and feeling like I accomplished something I worked so hard for.

Medizinstudium in München oder Freiburg oder anderer Ort?

Hallo,

Is 36 Too Late to Start a PhD in Automotive Acoustics in Europe?

Hi everyone,
I’m a 33-year-old engineer from India with 12+ years of experience in automotive NVH simulation, primarily in squeak & rattle and vibroacoustics for plastic and BIW components. I’ve also published three technical papers at SAE conferences.
After spending a decade in industry, I decided to return to academics and am currently pursuing an M.Tech in Automotive Technology at IIT Madras while continuing my career. I’ll be completing my master’s in about three years.
My long-term goal is to pursue a PhD in automotive acoustics, preferably in Europe, focusing on areas such as vibroacoustics, vehicle interior noise, and simulation.
My main concern is my age. By the time I complete my master’s, I’ll be around 36 years old.
Would my age be a disadvantage when applying for PhD positions in Europe? Has anyone started a PhD in their mid-30s after significant industry experience? I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences or any advice regarding universities, supervisors, or funding opportunities.
Thank you!

phd admission guide

Is there a market for a digital guide that helps prospective students secure fully funded PhD opportunities in Europe? Would people be willing to pay $20 for it, and what features would make it valuable enough to purchase?

What is your MiM application strategy this year? Looking for people to discuss with

I am planning to apply for MiM programs this cycle (preferably R1) and was wondering if anyone else is in the same boat.

Would be nice to have someone to discuss colleges, essays, GMAT/GRE prep, timelines, interviews, etc. with and keep each other accountable throughout the process.

My_qualifications - I graduated last year with a degree in engineering and have around a year of work experience, mainly looking at European MiM programs (HEC, INSEAD, ESSEC, LBS, ESCP, the usual)

If you’re applying too, feel free to reach out! Would be great to have someone to figure this whole process out with :)
